Chapter 1 of Sita Katha — Sita's Divine Birth. Sita is born in Janak's yagyabhumi, symbolizing her divinity.

Sita's Divine Birth

In the Treta Yuga, King Janak of Mithila was always dedicated to the welfare of his subjects. Despite walking the path of Dharma and justice, he had a peculiar sorrow in his heart – he had no children. The prosperity of the kingdom felt incomplete, as if a precious gem was missing. This is the story of the search and manifestation of that very gem.

Preparation of the Yajna Land

There was an atmosphere of sadness in the city of Mithila. King Janak, known for his scholarship and love of justice, was worried about being childless. He tried many remedies, performed charity and good deeds, took advice from sages, but found no result. The sages suggested he perform a grand yajna to bring back happiness and prosperity to the kingdom and fulfill his desire. A land was chosen for the yajna, a land as beautiful as heaven, where lush green grass and colorful flowers bloomed. To sanctify the yajna land, Brahmins chanted mantras and invoked the deities.

King Janak asked the learned Brahmins, "O Brahmin Dev! Will this yajna surely fulfill my desire for a child? Will the city of Mithila be joyful again?" The Brahmins replied, "Rajan, a yajna performed with faith and devotion will surely bear fruit. The blessings of the deities will always be upon you. Be patient and have faith in God."

Janak Plowing the Land

The preparations for the yajna were complete. To level the land, King Janak himself came forward with a plow. He touched the earth with his hands, as if seeking blessings from Mother Earth. As soon as he drove the first plough into the earth, a wondrous event occurred. The ploughshare got stuck in the ground, and King Janak saw a shining box buried there. He eagerly pulled the box out.

Upon opening the box, King Janak was astonished. Inside the box lay a divine maiden, radiant like the sun. Her face held an extraordinary peace and compassion. Tears welled up in King Janak's eyes. He lifted the maiden into his lap. It was as if all his sorrow vanished in an instant. He said to himself, "O Lord, what a divine play is this of Yours! You have filled my lap!"

Sita's Manifestation

The arrival of that divine maiden brought a new hope to Mithila. King Janak named the maiden 'Sita', which means "born from the ploughshare". With Sita's manifestation, a wave of joy swept through Mithila. People decorated their homes with lamps and celebrated. It was as if Goddess Lakshmi herself had incarnated in Mithila. The kingdom became prosperous with Sita's arrival. Sita's feet were sanctifying the dust of Mithila.

Summary of Chapter 1: During King Janak's yajna, Sita's divine manifestation occurred from the earth, bringing happiness and prosperity to Mithila. This event demonstrated that true devotion and selfless actions are always fruitful, and God always fulfills the desires of His devotees. This scene also teaches us to hold onto hope even in despair.
