Sheetala Mata Katha – Chapter 1: The Origin of Sheetala Mata

The Origin of Sheetala Mata
After the creation of the universe, the conflict between the gods and the demons continued to escalate. The atrocities of the demons were at their peak, and Mother Earth cried out in distress. The gods took refuge in Mother Durga, seeking her help to overcome this crisis.
Invocation of Goddess Durga
In the heavens, the assembly of gods was praising Mother Durga. The atmosphere was being purified by the sweet sound of incense, lamps, and bells. Each god looked at Mother Durga with compassionate eyes, eager to express their suffering. Their hearts were troubled by the atrocities of the demons, and they needed a power that could dispel this darkness. There was compassion in the collective prayer of the gods, a plea that reached directly to Mother Durga's heart.
Indra joined his hands and said, "O Mother! Have mercy on us. The demons have driven us out of heaven. The earth is filled with sins. We have no refuge but you."
Descent in the Form of Sheetala
Hearing the prayers of the gods, Mother Durga's heart melted. She assumed a new form with her divine power. This form of hers was calm and gentle, but her eyes held a wonderful blend of radiance and compassion. She was adorned in white garments, and the moon was seated on her head. In one hand, she held a broom, and in the other, a pitcher of cool water. She descended as Sheetala Mata, the goddess who dispels diseases and sufferings.
Sheetala Mata said with a gentle smile, "Gods, do not fear. I have come to protect you. I will remove the diseases and sufferings prevalent on Earth. My name will be Sheetala, and I will bestow coolness upon my devotees." With her cool touch, the fear in the hearts of the gods vanished, and a new energy coursed through them.
The Form of Sheetala Mata
The form of Sheetala Mata was enchanting and benevolent. She rode a donkey, which symbolized patience and tolerance. Accompanying her were her attendants named Jwarasur and Haijasur, who represented diseases but were under the Mother's control. In Sheetala Mata's hand were neem leaves, which possessed the power to ward off diseases. Her entire form was meant to bestow health and peace upon her devotees.
Sheetala Mata looked around and took a vow, "I will free this world from diseases. Whoever comes to my refuge, I will grant them coolness and health. But whoever becomes arrogant, I will also punish them!" Her voice held a wonderful confluence of power and compassion, attracting every being. Now, it remains to be seen upon whom Mata Sheetala's wrath will fall.
