Chapter 1 of the Pavagadh Mata Katha — Origin and the Beginning of Creation. This chapter sets the background for the beginning of creation and the manifestation of Mahakali.

Origin and the Beginning of Creation

In the eternal, infinite universe, darkness reigned. There was no sun, no moon, no stars. There was only void and immense peace, holding infinite possibilities within its womb. Then, from that void arose a sound, a vibration, which permeated all directions – Om.

The Beginning of Creation

From that Om, creation began. First, the sky was created, then air, fire, water, and finally, earth. On earth, mountains, rivers, and forests were formed. The gods came into being, prominent among them being Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh – the creator, preserver, and destroyer of the universe. The heavens became adorned with Indra and other deities. The gods lived in joy and peace, followed righteousness, and worshipped God through sacrifices. Everywhere, there was an empire of well-being and happiness. There was joy and peace in the heart. The earth was lush with green crops. Rivers flowed with nectar-like water. Birds sang sweet songs. An atmosphere of love and harmony prevailed all around.

Brahma pondered in his mind, "I have created this wonderful universe, but will it always remain so? Will there never be any change in it? Will sorrow and unrest never enter it?"

The Terror of Mahishasura

However, this joy and peace did not last long. Mahishasura, the king of demons, who was extremely powerful and cruel, pleased Lord Brahma through his severe penance. He asked for a boon that no god or man could kill him. Brahma said, "So be it," and Mahishasura became invincible. Upon receiving the boon, Mahishasura attacked heaven. He defeated the gods, dethroned Indra, and established his dominion over the heavens.

The gods, terrified, hid here and there. Mahishasura's terror spread throughout all the worlds. Cries of "Trahi-trahi" were heard everywhere. Sages and ascetics could not perform sacrifices. The earth groaned with sins. The radiance of the gods began to diminish. Despair and fear pervaded everywhere.

The Manifestation of Mahakali and Assurance to the Gods

The defeated and frightened gods approached Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh and pleaded for help. They described Mahishasura's atrocities and begged for protection. Hearing the piteous cries of the gods, Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh were filled with anger. From their radiance, a divine power manifested – the Adi Shakti Mahakali. Mahakali's form was extremely fearsome, yet her eyes held compassion and the radiance of power. Her eighteen hands held various weapons, ready to destroy the wicked.

"O gods, do not fear," Mahakali said in a grave voice. "I, the Adi Shakti, have come to protect you. I will slay Mahishasura and establish righteousness." Mahakali's words instilled new hope in the gods. They praised Mahakali and prayed for her to quickly slay Mahishasura. The land of Pavagadh was blessed by the manifestation of Mahakali.

Summary of Chapter 1: This chapter describes the origin of creation and the rise of the gods. After the terror of Mahishasura and the despair of the gods, Mahakali manifests, symbolizing hope and power. This chapter teaches us that when righteousness is in danger, divine power always comes to aid.
