Mangala Gauri Katha – Chapter 2: Difficulties and Devotion

Difficulties and Devotion
In the previous chapter, we saw how Shiva decided to test the merchant's love and faith. The merchant was unaware that the difficulties coming into his life were merely a means to measure the depth of his devotion. Now we will see what effect those difficulties have on him and his wife.
The Merchant's Calamity
The merchant, who until yesterday was full of wealth and prosperity, was suddenly surrounded by misfortunes. His business came to a standstill. The goods loaded in his ships sank, buyers turned away, and creditors stood at his door. His splendor began to turn to dust. Where there was once a festive atmosphere in the house, there was now silence. The lines of worry deepened in his eyes, and a look of despair became evident on his face. "What is happening to me?" he asked himself, "I have never wished ill upon anyone."
The merchant sat lost in thought, "It seems fortune has turned against me. Years of hard work have become useless in an instant. How will I now provide for my wife and family? Have I been abandoned by God?" His wife, who had always stood by him through thick and thin, was saddened to see him in this state, but she did not lose her courage. She said to her husband, "Do not worry, my lord. This is the cycle of life. Happiness is followed by sorrow, and sorrow is followed by happiness. We must have faith in God."
The Wife's Unwavering Faith
The merchant's wife, Mangala, was a pious and calm-natured woman. When calamity struck her husband, she did not lose her patience. She knew that true devotion and prayer held great power. She began to worship and fast for Mangala Gauri. Every Tuesday, she would go to the temple of Mother Gauri and worship her with devotion. She would pray to Mother Gauri to remove her husband's suffering and to keep her grace upon their family. Tears would be in her eyes, but her heart held unwavering faith.
Remembering Mangala Gauri, she would chant daily, "O Mother Gauri, you are the remover of all troubles. Keep your merciful gaze upon my husband and family. Give us the strength to overcome this difficult time. Our life is in your devotion." It was the result of her unwavering faith that a ray of hope remained in the merchant's heart. He felt that his wife's prayers would surely bear fruit.
The Invocation of Mangala Gauri
Gradually, the merchant also began to participate in the worship of Mangala Gauri with his wife. He experienced that he found peace and strength in prayer and devotion. One night, Mangala saw Mangala Gauri in a dream. Mother Gauri assured her that her husband's suffering would soon end and happiness and prosperity would return to their lives. She asked her to perform a special ritual.
Upon waking in the morning, Mangala told her husband about the dream. Together, they performed the ritual described by Mother Gauri with complete faith and devotion. After the ritual, the merchant received a new opportunity. A big deal came from a distant land, which had the potential to put his business back on track. This was the fruit of Mangala Gauri's grace.
The Son's Destiny
The merchant's business gradually began to grow again. His financial situation started to improve. A smile returned to his face. With the grace of Mangala Gauri, happiness returned to their lives. However, one desire was still unfulfilled – the desire for a son. Would Mangala Gauri fulfill this wish too? Would a son be born into their lives?
Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, we saw how the merchant and his wife maintained their devotion and faith during times of adversity. The prayers and remembrance of Mangala Gauri helped them overcome their crises. The true message of this chapter is the power of sincere devotion.
