Chapter 1 of Parvati's Penance Story — Parvati's Birth and Desire. Parvati is born to Himalaya and Maina, and from childhood, she desires to have Shiva as her husband.

Parvati's Birth and Longing

The churning of the ocean between the gods and demons resulted in the acquisition of nectar. Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini, enchanted the demons, and offered the nectar to the gods. Now, a new era was about to begin, an era where the power of Lord Shiva was to find a new foundation. A divine maiden was to be born in the house of the Himalayas, who would perform penance to unite with Shiva.

Joy in Himavan's Home

Amidst the snowy peaks of the Himalayas, a wondrous joy pervaded. A daughter was born in the home of King Himavan and his wife, Queen Menavati. The newborn infant possessed a divine radiance, as if the very rays of the sun had descended to earth in infant form. In Mother Menavati's lap, this infant shone like the moon. Happiness echoed throughout the Himalayas, as if nature itself was welcoming this divine arrival. Flowers bloomed all around, and nectar flowed in the rivers.

Hugging her daughter to her chest, Menavati said, "This is the fruit of our penance. This is not just an infant, but the very form of the Goddess." Himavan humbly said, "Beloved, it is true. I feel that something great is written in this maiden's destiny." He looked at his daughter with great affection and mentally named her "Parvati," the daughter of the King of Mountains.

Unwavering Devotion to Shiva

As Parvati grew, her devotion to Shiva became stronger. She would gaze towards Mount Kailash for hours, where Lord Shiva remained in deep meditation. Her mind was always absorbed at Shiva's feet. Parvati's friends would call her to play, but Parvati's mind was engrossed in devotion to Shiva. She would make Shivalingas from flowers and worship them. Every breath of hers chanted the name of Lord Shiva.

One day, Parvati asked her mother Menavati, "Mother, how can I attain Lord Shiva? My mind is only engrossed in Him." Menavati blessed her daughter and said, "Daughter, attaining Shiva is not easy. He is a great ascetic. But if your devotion is true, you will surely receive His grace." Parvati made a firm resolve that she would perform severe penance to attain Lord Shiva.

Narada Muni's Prophecy

One day, the celestial sage Narada visited Himavan's home. King Himavan and Queen Menavati welcomed him with due respect. Narada Muni looked at Parvati and said with a smile, "This maiden is not ordinary. It is written in her destiny to marry Lord Shiva. She is the reincarnation of Sati." Himavan and Menavati were astonished to hear his prophecy. Narada Muni further said, "But this marriage will not be possible until Parvati performs severe penance. To make Shiva realize His power, Parvati must win Him over with her devotion."

Hearing Narada Muni's words, Parvati's heart filled with joy. She had found the path to her goal. Narada Muni inspired her to perform penance and gave her proper guidance. Parvati decided to undertake penance at that very moment. She knew that this path was difficult, but her unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva would help her overcome every obstacle.

Towards Penance

After the guidance of Narada Muni, Parvati began her preparations for penance. She took blessings from her parents and set out to find a quiet place to perform severe penance. The next chapter will further clarify Parvati's path of penance and explain how the celestial sage Narada will guide Parvati from time to time so that she can succeed in her resolve to attain Lord Shiva.

Summary of Chapter 1: This chapter describes Parvati's birth, her unwavering devotion to Shiva, and the prophecy made by Narada Muni. This chapter teaches us that with true devotion and firm resolve, any goal can be achieved, no matter how difficult it may be.
