Parashurama Avatar Katha – Chapter 3: Parashurama's Revenge Begins
Parashurama's Revenge Begins
In the previous chapter, we saw that King Kartavirya Arjuna insulted Sage Jamadagni in his greed for the Kamadhenu cow. The king's ego and the sage's patience were both at their peak. Destiny was now to take a turn that would redden the earth with the blood of Kshatriyas. It was time for the fire of Parashurama's wrath to ignite, and the flames of his revenge were about to introduce their intensity to the entire world.
News of Father's Death
Maharishi Parashurama was engrossed in deep penance on Mahendra Mountain. His radiance was as intense as the sun, and his meditation unwavering. Suddenly, there was a tremor in nature, as if a terrible event was about to occur. A frightened mendicant arrived at his ashram, panting. His face was pale, and his voice was filled with profound despair. The peaceful atmosphere of the ashram was disturbed by the mendicant's arrival. The mendicant's words fell like thunderbolts on Parashurama's heart.
“O sage! A great calamity has occurred! King Kartavirya Arjuna has murdered your father, Sage Jamadagni! He tried to snatch the Kamadhenu cow, and when your father resisted, he killed him!” The mendicant sobbed. Parashurama's eyes turned red with anger. His body trembled violently. His mind was filled with a fierce desire for vengeance. "Kartavirya Arjuna... he killed my father? Shame on that sinner!" he roared.
The Fire of Revenge
The fire of revenge blazed in Parashurama's heart. He immediately broke his penance and picked up his divine Parashu (axe). His Parashu, bestowed upon him by Lord Shiva, was a symbol of his power. His arms twitched, and his anger erupted like a volcano. He immediately vowed to take revenge. He declared that he would rid the earth of Kshatriyas, so that no tyrannical king would ever dare to trouble a Brahmin again.
As Parashurama took his vow, lightning flashed in the sky and clouds thundered. This was a sign that Lord Vishnu himself was with him, and that his anger was justified. Lord Vishnu had granted Parashurama the power to protect dharma and destroy adharma. The very purpose of his avatar was to destroy the wicked, and the slaying of Kartavirya Arjuna was the first step in this objective.
The End of Kartavirya Arjuna
Parashurama, with all his might, reached Mahishmati, the capital of Kartavirya Arjuna. There he saw the king immersed in luxury in his court, with no remorse for his sins. Parashurama's anger flared even more. He roared and challenged the king to a duel. Kartavirya Arjuna, intoxicated by his own valor, had no idea of Parashurama's strength. The battle began, and Parashurama displayed his divine powers.
Kartavirya Arjuna fought with his thousand hands, but none of them availed against Parashurama's Parashu. Parashurama, with his divine power, severed all his weapons, and finally, with his Parashu, separated his head from his body. Kartavirya Arjuna met his end. The account of his atrocities was settled. Parashurama had avenged his father's death. This was made possible by the grace of Lord Vishnu, who had empowered Parashurama to establish dharma.
Summary of Chapter 3: In this chapter, we saw that Parashurama receives the news of his father's death and takes revenge by slaying Kartavirya Arjuna. This teaches us that the fruit of adharma is always destructive, and anger is also necessary for the protection of dharma. However, this anger should not deviate from the path of dharma. In the next chapter, Parashurama will resolve to rid the earth of Kshatriyas twenty-one times.
