Story of Karna, the Great Philanthropist – Chapter 5: Indra's Deception and the Armor

Indra's Deception and the Armour
After becoming the King of Anga, Karna's generosity and fame spread across the three worlds. Even the gods were aware of Karna's virtue. However, Indra, being Arjuna's father, was concerned that Karna's strength might defeat Arjuna in battle. Therefore, he devised a plan, a deception, to obtain Karna's unique strength, his armour and earrings.
The Arrival of Devaraj Indra
In the morning, as the Sun God illuminated the earth with his golden rays, Karna was engrossed in his daily prayers by the banks of the Ganges. His heart was filled with devotion and reverence. Just then, he saw a radiant Brahmin approaching. The Brahmin was old, with long matted hair, and a divine glow on his face, yet his body showed clear signs of weakness. Karna immediately rose from his seat, welcomed the Brahmin, touched his feet, and respectfully seated him.
Karna humbly said, "O Brahmin deity, your arrival is a great fortune for me. Please command, how may I serve you? Whatever I possess is all yours." In his heart, Karna sensed that this was no ordinary Brahmin, but the sentiment of 'Atithi Devo Bhava' (The guest is God) stopped him from thinking further. His generosity was about to be tested.
The Donation of Armour and Earrings
The Brahmin, who was actually Devaraj Indra, said with a slight tremor in his voice, "O Karna, I am greatly impressed by your generosity. I have heard that you never disappoint anyone. I have come to ask you for something, and I am confident that you will not disappoint me." Karna replied without any hesitation, "O Brahmin deity, whatever you ask, I will surely give you. Even my life is at your disposal." Indra took a deep breath and said, "I want your armour and earrings, which have been a part of your body since birth."
Hearing this, Karna was stunned for a moment. He knew that the armour and earrings were the source of his strength. As long as he had them, no one could defeat him. But he had given his word, and Karna never backed down from his promises. The Sun God, watching this test of his son from the sky, was filled with pride and sorrow. He knew that Indra was deceiving him, but he could not ask Karna to break his word. The path of Dharma is indeed difficult, but in the end, it is victory that prevails.
Indra's Boon
Karna, without any hesitation, removed his armour and earrings and handed them over to Indra in the guise of a Brahmin. Indra was astonished by Karna's generosity. He had never imagined that Karna would donate the armour and earrings that protected his life without any question. As a token of gratitude, Indra bestowed upon Karna an infallible weapon. He said, "O Karna, pleased by your generosity, I grant you this power. You can use it only once, and its strike will never be in vain. But remember, use it only in the most crucial battle of your life." Karna thanked Indra and accepted the infallible weapon. Karna knew that Indra had obtained his armour and earrings through deception, yet he respected the Devaraj. After this, Indra vanished. Now, a poignant conversation between Karna and Kunti was about to unfold.
Summary of Chapter 5: In this chapter, Indra, disguised as a Brahmin, deceitfully obtains Karna's armour and earrings. Karna, upholding his vow of generosity, donates everything without hesitation. This shows that generosity is the greatest virtue, and we must keep our promises at all costs.
