The Curse of Neglect

In the previous chapter, we saw the glory of Mother Lakshmi as the goddess of wealth and prosperity. However, if wealth is not used properly, it can also become a curse. This chapter tells us how the neglect of wealth invites the wrath of Mother Lakshmi, and what its ill effects are.

The Arrogance of a City

Once upon a time, there was a city as magnificent as Indrapuri, named Swarnapuri. Its inhabitants were full of wealth and grains. Their granaries were always full, and life was joyous. Every house shone with jewels, and every person's clothes were made of silk. However, with time, arrogance crept into the people of Swarnapuri. They were more interested in displaying their wealth and forgot to help the needy.

An old woman, who once lived with respect in Swarnapuri, was now starving. She thought, "O God, have the people of Swarnapuri become so stone-hearted that they show no mercy to the poor? Has this wealth stolen their souls?"

Lakshmi's Wrath

One day, Mother Lakshmi, disguised as a poor woman, went to Swarnapuri to beg for alms. She went from house to house asking for food, but was met with disdain at every door. People, mistaking her for a beggar, rebuked her and showed off their wealth. Finally, Mother Lakshmi revealed her true form and said, "You people have insulted wealth, you have forgotten the needy. You have all become blind in your pride of wealth. I curse you that all your prosperity will be destroyed!"

These words from Mother Lakshmi's mouth were like thunderbolts. From that very moment, the fate of Swarnapuri began to change. Its wealth and prosperity gradually began to diminish. Trade came to a standstill, granaries became empty, and poverty spread among the people. Swarnapuri, once known for its prosperity, soon turned into a desolate ruin. Just as it is important to receive Mother Lakshmi's blessings, it is equally essential to maintain her respect and use wealth properly.

Destruction from Excess

The destruction of Swarnapuri teaches us that excessive wealth can also lead to destruction if not used properly. This story reminds us that we should always help the poor and needy, and use wealth wisely. In the next chapter, we will learn how devotion and worship can please Mother Lakshmi and bring happiness and prosperity into life.
