The Chaturdashi of the Krishna Paksha of Kartik month (according to the Gujarati calendar, Chodash of Ashwin month's Vad Paksha) is called 'Kali Chaudas'. This holy night is dedicated to the worship of Maa Mahakali, Kaal Bhairav, and Sankatmochan Hanuman Ji. Especially in Gujarat and Western India, Maa Kali is worshipped on this day to remove negative energy, evil eye, tantric obstacles, and evil forces from the home. There is an ancient tradition of making urad dal vadas and offering them to Maa Kali and Bhairavnath, and keeping a four-faced lamp outside the house on this day.

Kali Chaudas: Introduction, Tantra Sadhana & Festival of Protection

In the five-day series of the great festival of Diwali, Kali Chaudas (Kali Chaudas) holds a very special, mysterious, and energetic place. While Dhanteras is for health and prosperity, and Diwali is for welcoming Goddess Mahalakshmi, this great night of Chaturdashi offers an infallible opportunity to completely destroy negative forces, ghost and spirit afflictions, tantric defects, evil eye, and the fear of untimely death from life.

Especially in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Western India, Kali Chaudas is celebrated as the awakened day of the great power Maa Bhadrakali, Lord Kaal Bhairav, and Rudravatar Lord Hanuman Ji. In Tantra Shastra, it is given the name 'Kalratri', in which any sattvic or tantric sadhana performed is never in vain.

"Om Kreem Kalikayai Namah. Sarvavighnavinashinyai Trailokyasanrakshinyai Namonamah॥"
(Meaning: Salutations again and again to the Supreme Goddess Mahakali, who protects the three worlds and destroys all obstacles, ailments, and negative forces.)

Panchang Calculation: Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi vs. Aaso Vad Chaudas

Due to differences in calculation methods in Indian Panchang systems, the names of months differ in the Panchangs of North India and Gujarat/Maharashtra, although the festival is celebrated on the same day in both places:

  • North Indian Panchang (Purnimant): As the new month begins after Sharad Purnima, this is called the Chaturdashi of the Krishna Paksha of Kartik month (Naraka Chaturdashi/Choti Diwali).
  • Gujarati & Maharashtrian Panchang (Amant): As the new month begins after the new moon, the month of Ashwin is considered valid until Diwali. Therefore, it is celebrated with full devotion as Aaso Vad Chaudas (કાળી ચૌદશ).

Mythological Tale: Slaying of Daruka Asura and Maa Kali's Fierce Form

According to the Linga Purana and Markandeya Purana, in ancient times, a very powerful demon named Daruka had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that he could only be slain by a woman.

1. Distress of the Gods and Surrender to Lord Shiva

Intoxicated by the boon, Daruka conquered the three worlds and inflicted terrible atrocities on the gods, Gandharvas, and sages. Troubled by Daruka's terror, all the gods went to Lord Shiva and pleaded for protection.

2. Emergence of Mahakali from the Poison in Shiva's Throat

Lord Shiva smiled and looked at Mother Parvati, saying, "O Goddess! For the protection of the world, you slay Daruka." Then Mother Parvati awakened a part of the Kalakuta poison that was contained in Lord Shiva's throat with her power. From the radiance of Mahadeva's third eye and throat, Maa Kali, dark-complexioned, terrifying, and three-eyed, emerged.

3. Slaying of Daruka and Shiva's Rest

Maa Kali's fierce roar reverberated through the sky, and in a moment, she annihilated Daruka Asura and his entire demonic army. After the slaying of the demon, Maa Kali's rage became so intense that her destructive dance began to burn the entire universe. To save the world, Lord Shiva himself lay down on the ground. As soon as Maa Kali's foot touched Lord Shiva's chest, she became ashamed, calmed down, and her fierce form transformed into a benevolent one. This victory occurred on the night of Vijay Chaturdashi, which began to be worshipped as Kali Chaudas.

Urad Dal Vada (તળેલાં વડાં) Offering: Scientific & Astrological Secrets

On the day of Kali Chaudas, there is a mandatory tradition of making urad dal vadas (તળેલાં વડાં / Medu Vada) and offering them to Maa Kali and Bhairav Ji:

  • Pacification of Rahu, Ketu, and Shani: In astrology, urad dal is considered the primary grain that pacifies the tamasic energy of Shani, Rahu, and Ketu. Offering urad pacifies the malefic influence of cruel planets in the horoscope.
  • Burning Negativity in Oil: The process of frying vadas in hot oil is considered a symbol of burning negative energy. All negative vibrations in the house are believed to be destroyed in the offering of that oil.
  • Placing Vada at the Crossroads (Utaar Vidhan): In Gujarat and Malwa, after offering the vada, there is a custom of taking it from the head of family members and placing it at a crossroads or outside the house, which protects the family from evil eye and diseases throughout the year.

Trishakti Sadhana: Worship of Maa Kali, Kaal Bhairav, and Hanuman Ji

On the great night of Kali Chaudas, there is a ritual of worshipping three supremely awakened divine powers:

  • Maa Bhadrakali: The Shakti form of Maa Kali destroys ignorance, inner vices (lust, anger, ego), and external enemies.
  • Lord Kaal Bhairav: Kaal Bhairav, the guardian of time and directions, protects the devotee from untimely death, fear, and the torments of Yama.
  • Lord Hanuman, the Remover of Obstacles: On this night, by offering vermilion, jasmine oil, and a garland of Akanda flowers to Hanuman Ji and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa or Bajrang Baan, one is freed from incurable diseases and fear.

Kali Chaudas Puja Vidhi, Deepdan & Kajal Raksha Vidhan (Step-by-Step)

  1. Purification & Sankalpa: In the evening, take a bath and wear clean clothes. Spread a red or black mat at the puja place.
  2. Installation of Maa Kali's Idol: Place a picture of Maa Kali, Kaal Bhairav, or Hanuman Ji on a raised platform covered with a red cloth.
  3. Lighting the Lamp: Light a lamp with mustard oil or sesame oil. Offer red hibiscus flowers, vermilion, cloves, raisins, and perfume to the Goddess.
  4. Offering of Vada: Offer freshly fried urad dal vadas and kheer as prasad.
  5. Kali Chaudas Raksha Kajal (Kajal Padvo): Hold a copper or silver plate over the flame of the lamp to collect the soot (kajal). Applying this kajal to the eyes of all family members and behind the ears provides protection from the evil eye and negative influences for the entire year.
  6. Nishith Kaal Mantra Jap: At midnight, chant the mantra "Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Viche" 108 times with a Rudraksha mala.
  7. Choumukha Deepdan: After the puja, place a four-wick lamp facing the south direction outside the main entrance of the house.
