Chapter 4 of Sage Durvasa's story — Shakuntala's misfortune. This chapter narrates the story of the curse given to Shakuntala by Sage Durvasa, due to which Dushyanta forgets her.

Shakuntala's Misfortune

In the previous chapter, we heard the description of Ambarish's devotion to Vishnu and the grace bestowed upon him. Now, we move towards another unfortunate event that occurred due to Sage Durvasa himself, the impact of which lasted for ages on Shakuntala's life. Sage Durvasa was known for his angry nature, and the unintentional disrespect shown by Shakuntala angered him, the consequences of which Shakuntala had to bear.

Momentary Inattention in the Ashram

In the absence of Maharishi Kanva, Shakuntala was managing the affairs of the ashram. One day, she was sitting with her dear friends Anusuya and Priyamvada, lost in thoughts of her husband Dushyanta. Dushyanta had come to the ashram during a hunting expedition, and Shakuntala was captivated by his beauty and virtues. Their love had taken such a deep form that they had performed Gandharva marriage, and now Shakuntala was waiting for Dushyanta's arrival every moment. Her mind was immersed in feelings of love and separation.

An immense love for Dushyanta was overflowing in Shakuntala's heart. "Oh beloved, when will you return? When will I see you again?" she was saying to herself. Her friends were also teasing her about Dushyanta, and the atmosphere was filled with laughter and joy. She was not even aware of the outside world.

Durvasa's Curse

Just at that moment, Sage Durvasa arrived at the ashram gate. Durvasa Rishi, famous for his penance and anger, expected to be welcomed as a guest by Shakuntala. He called out "Is anyone there?" in his voice, but Shakuntala was so lost in her thoughts that she did not hear the sage's voice at all. Sage Durvasa called out again, but there was still no response. Sage Durvasa considered this an insult to him.

Burning with the fire of anger, Sage Durvasa cursed, "He whose thoughts have made you oblivious to me, a tapasvi, will forget you! Just as a line drawn on sand in a river is erased, so shall he forget you." The words of the curse, emanating from the powerful Durvasa's mouth, echoed in the ashram. A strange sense of despair filled the atmosphere.

Shakuntala's Departure

When Shakuntala learned about the curse, she became extremely distressed. Her friends tried to beg Sage Durvasa for forgiveness, but the curse could not be taken back. However, they succeeded in convincing the sage that Shakuntala's mind was distracted and she had not done it intentionally. Sage Durvasa said that the effect of the curse would lessen when Shakuntala showed Dushyanta some token that would remind him of their love story. When the time came, Rishi Kanva bid farewell to Shakuntala to her husband's home. Destiny had written a difficult test for Shakuntala. Now, let's see if justice will be done to Shakuntala?

Summary of Chapter 4: In this chapter, we heard the story of Shakuntala receiving a curse due to Sage Durvasa's anger. From this incident, we learn that we should always be aware of our surroundings and should not disrespect anyone, even if our mind is occupied elsewhere. Also, we should remember that anger is a destructive emotion that can have dire consequences.
