Introduction

Vaishno Devi Temple is one of the major pilgrimage sites in India, located on the Trikuta Mountains in Jammu and Kashmir. This temple is dedicated to Mata Vaishno Devi, who is considered an incarnation of Maa Durga. Every year, millions of devotees come here for darshan.

Mythological Significance

Once, a yogi named Gorakhnath told his disciple Bhairavnath about the divine form of Mata Vaishno Devi. Bhairavnath was a powerful tantric and he decided to test the power of the Mother. When Mata Vaishno Devi started her penance, Bhairavnath started harassing her. To avoid this harassment, the Mother fled and took refuge in Banganga, Charan Paduka, and Ardhkuwari Cave. Eventually, the Mother entered the cave of Trikuta Mountain.

When Bhairavnath reached near the cave, the Mother revealed her form and warned him, but when he did not stop, the Mother assumed the form of Mahakali from her form and killed him. After Bhairavnath's death, his soul fell at the feet of the Mother and he asked for forgiveness. The Mother forgave him and granted him the boon that whoever comes to visit her will also visit the Bhairavnath Temple, only then will his journey be considered complete. In the Vaishno Devi Temple, there are three Pindis representing the three forms of the Mother. These are worshiped as Mata Mahakali, Mata Mahalakshmi, and Mata Mahasaraswati.
