Tales of Shiva's Powers

After the marriage of Parvati and Shiva, there was an atmosphere of joy and celebration on Mount Kailash. Gods, sages, and Gandharvas together welcomed Shiva and Parvati. Now we will describe the powers and divine plays of Lord Shiva, which made him Mahadeva.

Slaying of Tripurasura

A long time ago, the three mighty sons of Tarakasura - Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali - had tormented the gods. They constructed three impenetrable cities that could travel anywhere in the three worlds. Because of these cities, they were called Tripurasura, and their atrocities became unbearable. All the gods, including Indra, went to Lord Vishnu, and Vishnu advised them to seek refuge in Lord Shiva. Seeing the gravity of the situation, all the gods set off towards Mount Kailash, filled with hope and fear.

"O Mahadeva, you are omnipotent. The three worlds are suffering from the atrocities of Tripurasura. Please protect us!" The gods prostrated themselves at the feet of Lord Shiva and said, "O Mahadeva, you are omnipotent. The three worlds are suffering from the atrocities of Tripurasura. Please protect us!" Lord Shiva replied calmly, "Do not worry. I will slay Tripurasura. You all return to your respective worlds."

Drinking the Koot Vish (Poison)

Once, the gods and demons were churning the ocean together to obtain nectar. During the churning, a terrible poison called Halahala appeared. The three worlds began to burn from the flames of that poison. Both gods and demons became terrified and ran towards Lord Shiva for their protection. To protect the world, Lord Shiva took the poison in his hands and drank it. Parvati pressed his throat, causing the poison to stop in his throat. For this reason, Lord Shiva came to be known as Neelkanth (the blue-throated one).

After drinking the poison, Mother Parvati became distressed. She said to Shiva, "O Lord, what have you done? Why did you put yourself in danger?" Shiva smiled and said, "O Parvati, for the welfare of the world, I had to drink this poison. The truth is that there is no greater happiness than alleviating the suffering of one's devotees." The effect of the poison was so intense that Shiva even had a slight fever, but he conquered it with the power of his radiance and penance.

Slaying of Andhakasura

Andhakasura was a powerful demon, the son of Hiranyaksha. He performed severe penance to obtain a boon of immortality from Lord Shiva. According to one legend, he mistook Goddess Parvati for his mother and began to try to possess her. Angered, Lord Shiva struck Andhakasura with his trident. With every drop of blood that fell from Andhakasura's body, a new demon was born. The gods, terrified, prayed to Lord Shiva.

Then Lord Shiva, with his power, manifested a goddess who drank every drop of Andhakasura's blood. Thus, Andhakasura was slain. Andhakasura eventually became a devotee of Shiva and joined his Ganas (attendants). Lord Shiva proved with his power that he is both compassionate and powerful. Even the wicked attain salvation through his grace.

Thus, Lord Shiva protected the gods and humans from crises by displaying his powers. His divine plays are infinite and impossible to describe.
