Navdurga Katha – Chapter 5: Skandmata: Mother of Skanda (Kartikeya)

Skandamata: Mother of Skanda (Kartikeya)
After Goddess Kushmanda created the universe, life began to flourish. The conflict between gods and demons continued, and the gods needed a valiant warrior to lead them effectively. It was then that Goddess Parvati's maternal love manifested as Skandamata, who dedicates her son Kartikeya to the cosmos.
The Terror of Tarakasura
The three worlds were in turmoil due to the atrocities of Tarakasura. The gods were terrified, and the sages could not perform their sacrifices. The Earth groaned, and the heavens were in chaos. Indra's throne trembled, and the glory of Swarga Loka diminished. Seeing this, Goddess Parvati's heart filled with compassion. Her motherhood stirred, and she desired a son who could become the protector of the gods. "O Lord," the Goddess prayed, "grant me the strength to protect Dharma."
Devraj Indra said with a worried tone, "Mother, only the son of Shiva can kill Tarakasura. Is this possible?" Brihaspati replied, "Yes, Devraj, everything is possible with the grace of Mother Parvati."
The Birth and Upbringing of Kartikeya
Kartikeya was born from the divine radiance of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. His brilliance was so intense that even Agni Deva himself was unable to bear it. Eventually, Kartikeya was raised by the Krittikas, hence he was called Kartikeya. From his infancy, Kartikeya possessed extraordinary valor and radiance. Goddess Parvati's heart was filled with joy seeing Kartikeya's childhood pastimes. She would embrace him, tell him stories, and teach him the knowledge of weapons. "My child," the Goddess would say, "you will be the protector of the gods and establish Dharma."
Mother Skandamata not only made Kartikeya physically strong but also taught him knowledge and ethics. Her maternal affection was forever imprinted on Kartikeya's heart. The Goddess's blessings were always with him, like an armor.
Commander of the Gods
As Kartikeya grew, the tales of his valor and prowess spread in all directions. The gods appointed him their commander. Leading the gods, Kartikeya attacked the army of Tarakasura. A fierce battle ensued between the two armies. Kartikeya destroyed the demons with his divine weapons. Finally, he slew Tarakasura and freed the gods from fear. The gods rejoiced and sang the glory of Goddess Skandamata.
With the grace of Skandamata, Kartikeya brought victory to the gods. His maternal love and strength became a source of inspiration for the world. It was the Goddess's blessing that made Kartikeya so powerful and valiant. The gods together praised Mother Skandamata, "O Mother, it is by your grace that Dharma has triumphed today!"
Katyayani, the Fierce Warrior
After Kartikeya slew Tarakasura, the gods breathed a sigh of relief, but the terror of the demons was not completely eradicated. Another terrible demon named Mahishasura was tormenting the Earth with his atrocities. To slay this demon, the gods worshipped Goddess Parvati, and the Goddess incarnated as Katyayani, a fierce warrior ready to slay Mahishasura. The next chapter will narrate the saga of Goddess Katyayani's valor.
