Mokshada Ekadashi – Introduction

Mokshada Ekadashi is celebrated on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon phase) of the month of Margashirsha. In 2026, this Ekadashi will fall on Tuesday, December 15th. This Ekadashi is called 'Mokshada' because it destroys all sins and grants liberation (Moksha). It is also known as 'Vaikuntha Ekadashi' because it is believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu visits Vaikuntha Loka (His celestial abode).

Among all Ekadashis, Mokshada Ekadashi holds a special place and is known as the 'Best Ekadashi'. It is believed that observing the fast of this Ekadashi frees a person from the sufferings of many lifetimes and leads them directly to Vaikuntha Loka. This is also an Ekadashi that liberates ancestors.

The Fasting Story of Mokshada Ekadashi

In ancient times, there was a city named Mahishmati, where King Mahijit ruled. The king's father had passed away and was suffering in the form of a ghost (Preta Yoni). King Mahijit learned this from a sage who had visited his father. The king wished to free his father from this suffering.

The king then asked Maharishi Markandeya for a solution to alleviate this suffering. The Maharishi advised him to observe the fast of 'Mokshada Ekadashi' of the Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha. The king, with great devotion, observed this Ekadashi fast according to the prescribed rituals and dedicated its merit to his father.

As soon as the king offered the merit of the fast to his father, his father was freed from the Preta Yoni and attained heaven. Thus, by observing the fast of Mokshada Ekadashi, one can liberate not only oneself but also one's ancestors.

Fasting Method

Preparations for the fast begin from the night of Dashami (the day before Ekadashi). On this night, consume sattvic (pure and vegetarian) food and observe celibacy. Sleep on the ground at night and keep remembering the Lord.

On the day of Ekadashi, wake up before sunrise, bathe, and wear clean clothes. Install an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu and worship Him using the Panchopachara or Shodashopachara method. Offering Tulsi leaves is considered highly auspicious. Chant the mantra 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' continuously.

TimeActivity
MorningWake up during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, and wear clean clothes.
After SunriseWorship Lord Vishnu, chant mantras.
Throughout the DayConsume fruits and milk (Phalahar), do not eat grains. Keep the mind calm.
EveningPerform Aarti of Lord Vishnu, sing devotional songs.
At NightStay awake (Jagran) or sleep remembering the Lord.

On the day of Dwadashi (the day after Ekadashi), break the fast at an auspicious time. Offer food to Brahmins and give donations as per your capacity. After that, break the fast by consuming sattvic food yourself.

What to Eat and What Not to Eat During the Fast

During the Mokshada Ekadashi fast, the consumption of fruits and milk products (Phalahar) is prescribed. You can consume fruits, milk, yogurt, butter, paneer (Indian cottage cheese), nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios), water chestnut, kuttu ka atta (buckwheat flour) for making puris or pakoras, and sabudana (tapioca pearls) for khichdi or kheer. All these items are considered sattvic and suitable for the fast.

Consumption of rice is strictly forbidden during this fast. Additionally, all types of lentils, eggplant, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, masoor dal, mustard seeds, garlic, onion, and tamasic (impure) foods should be avoided. The reason for avoiding rice is the belief that rice has a high water content, which is against the rules of the Ekadashi fast.
