Chapter 3 of the Tale of Karna, the Great Philanthropist — Karna's Warrior Training. Karna attempts to receive education from Dronacharya, but is rejected due to being the son of a charioteer. He is then taught by Parashurama.

Karna's Warrior Training

Raised as a son by Adhirath, Karna began to grow. Karna's childhood passed happily, playing on the banks of the Ganges, herding cows, and hiding in his mother Radha's embrace, but one desire grew stronger in his heart – the desire to become a great warrior. He was aware of his immense strength and wanted to make it meaningful. He could only gain that strength through knowledge of warfare.

Plea for Education from Dronacharya

Young Karna had now become a powerful youth. His body had the radiance of the sun and immense strength in his arms. His mind was eager to learn the art of warfare. So, one day he set off towards Hastinapur. He had heard that Dronacharya, the world's best archer, was educating the princes there. Karna's eyes were filled with hope and his heart with enthusiasm. He wanted to receive his education from Dronacharya himself.

Upon reaching Hastinapur, Karna entered Dronacharya's ashram. He bowed at Guru Drona's feet and humbly said, "Gurudev, I am Karna, and I wish to become your disciple. I have a strong desire to gain knowledge of warfare. Please take me under your protection." Dronacharya looked at Karna intently. He was impressed by his radiant eyes and powerful physique, but he refused him, stating that he only taught princes and Kshatriyas. Karna's heart was filled with disappointment, but he did not give up. The radiance of the son of the sun within him became even more intense.

Receiving Education from Parashurama

After being disappointed by Dronacharya, Karna decided to receive education from Guru Parashurama. He knew that Parashurama only taught Brahmins. Therefore, he introduced himself as a Brahmin and approached Parashurama. Parashurama was pleased to see the radiant youth and accepted him as his disciple. Guru Parashurama revealed all the secrets of archery to Karna. Karna also received the education with complete devotion and dedication. He became a great archer. He gained knowledge of divine weapons and became proficient in warfare. The Sun God was blessing his son.

One day, as Karna was sleeping with his head in Guru Parashurama's lap, an insect began to bite his thigh. Karna felt immense pain, but he endured the pain so as not to disturb Guru Parashurama's sleep. Blood began to flow, but he did not move at all. When Parashurama woke up, he saw that blood was flowing from Karna's thigh. He understood that this could not be a Brahmin. Only a Kshatriya could endure such unbearable pain. Angrily, Parashurama asked Karna for his truth. Then Karna, trembling, revealed the truth that he was the son of a charioteer.

Parashurama's Curse to Karna

Upon learning the truth, Parashurama was filled with anger. He cursed Karna, "You have gained knowledge from me by lying. Therefore, when you need this knowledge the most, you will forget it." This curse was a significant turning point in Karna's life. Hearing the guru's curse, Karna became sad. He fell at Guru Parashurama's feet and begged for forgiveness. He knew that his lie was unforgivable, but he was helpless. He had lied only to gain knowledge.

The Sun God was saddened to see his son's pain. He knew that Karna would become a great warrior, but the guru's curse would not leave him. He inspired his son to be patient and believe in his actions. The Sun God also assured Karna that he would be with him in every situation. Karna listened to his father and became calm. He gained the strength to face the future.

Summary of Chapter 3: In this chapter, we saw that Karna tried to get education from Dronacharya but failed. Then he received education from Parashurama, but due to lying, he was cursed. From this chapter, we learn that the path of truth is the best, and lying ultimately leads to sorrow. And, no matter how many obstacles come, we must keep trying to achieve our goals. In the next chapter, we will see how Karna becomes the King of Anga and befriends Duryodhana.
