📖 What is Panchang and Why It Matters
Panchang is an ancient Hindu almanac based on the positions of the Sun, Moon and other planets. The word comes from Sanskrit — pancha meaning five, and anga meaning limb. The five elements are: Tithi, Vaar, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana.
In Hinduism, every auspicious activity — weddings, housewarming, starting a business, or long journeys — requires consulting the Panchang for a Shubh Muhurat (auspicious time). Beyond religious purposes, it guides agriculture, seasonal planning, and important personal decisions.
🕉 The Five Elements of Panchang
Tithi is the angular distance between the Moon and Sun. There are 30 Tithis — 15 in Shukla Paksha (waxing) and 15 in Krishna Paksha (waning). Choosing the right Tithi is essential for fasts, worship, and auspicious events.
Today: Ashtami (Krishna Paksha)The seven days of the week are named after seven planets — Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn), Sunday (Sun).
Today: ThursdayThe Moon transits through one of 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) each day. Each Nakshatra has its own deity and qualities that influence the day's energy.
Today: BharaniYoga is derived by adding the longitudes of the Sun and Moon. There are 27 Yogas, some auspicious (Amrita, Saubhagya) and some inauspicious (Vishkumbha, Vajra).
Today: GandaA Karana is half a Tithi. There are 11 Karanas — 4 fixed and 7 movable. The Bhadra Karana is considered inauspicious for starting new work.
