Chapter 4 of Patanjali Yoga Sutras — Interpretations and Impact. This chapter focuses on various commentaries written on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and their impact on Yoga philosophy.

Commentaries and Influence

In the previous chapter, we witnessed the journey of the compilation of the Yoga Sutras, and learned about the tireless efforts of Maharishi Patanjali. Now, in this fourth chapter, we will discuss the commentaries and influences that have kept this great scripture alive for ages, and feel its indelible mark on modern yoga. As if a seed is germinating in the soil, we will see how this knowledge blossomed into a tree.

Vyasa Bhashya: The First Light of Knowledge

Imagine a serene ashram, where the sound of a conch shell echoes in the Brahma Muhurta. Disciples, with calm minds, sit around their guru. Guru Vyasa, with a radiant countenance, begins his commentary on the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. His voice carries the purity of the Ganges and the depth of the Himalayas. Each sutra comes alive with his commentary, as if a closed bud is blooming. This first ray of knowledge, Vyasa Bhashya, becomes the cornerstone of Yoga philosophy.

“O disciples,” Vyasa says, “to understand Patanjali’s sutras is akin to understanding yourself. This path is difficult, but with faith and continuous practice, it becomes easy. To control the modifications of the mind is, in reality, to liberate oneself.”

The Rise of Commentaries and the Spread of Philosophy

After Vyasa Bhashya, the rays of Yoga philosophy began to spread far and wide. Great scholars like Vachaspati Misra, Bhojadeva, and Vijnanabhikshu further clarified the Yoga Sutras with their commentaries. Various opinions and ideas were churned, making this ocean of knowledge even deeper and wider. Kings embraced yoga, saints propagated it, and common people made it an integral part of their lives. The echo of yoga could be heard in every village, every city. Just as many lamps are lit from one lamp, so did Patanjali’s knowledge illuminate every heart.

It was by Patanjali’s grace that Yoga philosophy survived despite adverse circumstances. He gave knowledge in the form of a seed, which the gurus nurtured into a vast tree. It was no longer just a physical exercise, but became a complete philosophy of life, connecting man to himself and to the Supreme Being.

Patanjali’s Influence on Modern Yoga

Today, in the twenty-first century, we see how widespread and profound Patanjali’s influence is. Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga – all are based on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. In the hustle and bustle of modern life, yoga has become a refuge, an island of peace. People are practicing yoga to find relief from stress and to maintain physical and mental health. This is a powerful testament that Patanjali’s knowledge is timeless and universal.

Although modern yoga may have undergone some changes, its core element remains the same – the cessation of the modifications of the mind. The path shown by Patanjali is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. He left a legacy that will continue to guide humanity from generation to generation, and ultimately lead to union and liberation.

The Guide: Union and Liberation

In this chapter, we have seen how the commentaries and influences of Maharishi Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras have kept Yoga philosophy alive for ages. From Vyasa Bhashya to modern yoga, the stream of this knowledge has flowed continuously. Now, in the next chapter, we will move towards the ultimate goal, Samadhi and liberation, for which all this effort is made. That union, where the soul merges into the Supreme Being, where suffering ends and joy begins.

Summary of Chapter 4: In this chapter, we explored the commentaries and influence of the Yoga Sutras through Vyasa Bhashya and other commentaries. We also saw how relevant Patanjali’s Yoga philosophy is even today. The spiritual lesson of this chapter is that true knowledge is attained through the guidance of a guru and continuous practice, and this knowledge leads us towards liberation.
