The Escape and Manifestation of Vindhyavasini

In the previous chapter, we learned how Yogamaya was born from the womb of Yashoda Maiya, and how she entered Nandbaba's house. Kansa feared the destruction of Devaki's eighth child, but who can thwart the decree of fate? Yogamaya herself was a part of the Adi Shakti, whose task was to destroy sin from the world.

Kansa's Wrath and Yogamaya's Ascension

Dense darkness pervaded the prison of Mathura. Kansa stood before Devaki with his sword in hand, his eyes red with anger. As soon as the infant girl born from Yashoda Maiya's womb was placed in Devaki's hands, Kansa attempted to snatch her. His heart was filled with hardness; he was haunted by the fear for his own life. He thought, by killing this girl, I will secure my future.

He raised his hand to dash the infant girl against a stone. Just then, a divine light emanated from the girl's body, and she slipped from Kansa's grasp and flew towards the sky. "What is this?" Kansa screamed. "Who is this power that is snatching my protection from me?" He trembled with fear and rage, unable to comprehend this miracle. "I will not let her go! I must stop her!"

The Eight-Armed Form on Vindhya Mountain

Yogamaya, escaping from Kansa's prison, reached Vindhya Mountain directly. There, she assumed the form of the eight-armed Goddess. Various weapons adorned her eight hands. Her radiant face illuminated all four directions. Compassion and power shone together in the Goddess's eyes. All the sages and deities gathered on Vindhya Mountain to behold her. They chanted praises to the Adi Shakti.

The Goddess spoke in a sweet voice, "O gods, do not be afraid. I have come here to establish Dharma and destroy the wicked. Kansa's end is certain. I will reside on Vindhya Mountain and be worshipped by the name 'Vindhyavasini'." The peace and devotion in everyone's hearts were stirred by the Goddess's form and assurance. The glory of the Vindhya region became immense.

The Establishment and Glory of the Name Vindhyavasini

From that day, the Goddess became famous by the name Vindhyavasini. Vindhya Mountain became her abode, and devotees began to come from far and wide to worship her. The Goddess fulfills all the desires of her devotees and protects them from calamities. The glory of Vindhyavasini spread throughout the three worlds. People began to sing songs of her power and compassion.

After this manifestation of Goddess Vindhyavasini, the terror of demons on Earth increased even further. A powerful demon named Mahishasura had established his dominion over heaven and earth. To liberate the gods and humans from him, Goddess Vindhyavasini now decided to fight Mahishasura. The next chapter will narrate the story of the battle with Mahishasura.
