Vibhishana Sharanagati Katha – Chapter 4: Rama Accepts Vibhishana

Rama Accepts Vibhishana
Vibhishana, the forsaken brother of Ravana, flew across the ocean and reached Rama's camp. He had come seeking refuge, a shelter where righteousness and justice resided, far from Ravana's tyranny. A strange stir rippled through Rama's army; was this a trick by Ravana, or had he truly turned towards dharma?
Hanuman's Argument in Support of Vibhishana
A wave of deep contemplation swept through Rama's camp. Sugriva and other Vanara generals doubted Vibhishana. They were aware of Ravana's deceit and cunning, and feared this might be a ploy. The air was thick with apprehension and disbelief, everyone awaiting Rama's decision. Vibhishana, standing on the shore, was calm, his eyes a mixture of remorse and hope. He knew he had to prove his intentions.
"O Rama," said Hanuman, "I admit that Vibhishana is Ravana's brother, but there seems to be truth in his words. His speech reflects a love for dharma and justice. He himself has opposed Ravana's injustice, and now he has come to your refuge. We should give him an opportunity. Are we not Dharmaraja? Is it not our duty to protect those who seek refuge?" Hanuman's words, filled with truth and conviction, brought peace to the camp.
Rama Grants Assurance to Vibhishana
Rama looked at everyone. His eyes held compassion and the brilliance of justice. He said in a grave tone, "Vibhishana, do not be afraid. Whoever comes to my refuge, I grant them assurance. I recognize the purity of your heart. I believe you will walk the path of dharma." Rama stepped forward and embraced Vibhishana. In that touch was affection and acceptance, which filled Vibhishana's heart with peace.
Hearing Rama's assurance, peace spread in the hearts of all present in the camp. Everyone was overwhelmed by Rama's compassion and sense of justice. They realized that Rama is indeed the protector of dharma, and no harm can ever befall those who seek his refuge. Rama declared Vibhishana his friend and ally, which further boosted Vibhishana's confidence.
Declared King of Lanka
Rama immediately declared Vibhishana the king of Lanka. Lakshmana was ordered to immediately consecrate Vibhishana as king with the waters of the ocean. The scene was wondrous; the ocean seemed to approve of Rama's decision and anointed Vibhishana with its waves. This was the beginning of a new era, an era where dharma would be established and injustice would end. Vibhishana was now ready to work with Rama to establish dharma in Lanka.
Rama's grace is boundless. He not only gave refuge to Vibhishana but also made him the king of Lanka. This is proof of his power, that he can uplift even the downtrodden. This decision of Rama will change the destiny of Lanka in the times to come and end Ravana's injustice. Now, preparations for war and alliance strategies will be made.
Summary of Chapter 4: In this chapter, we saw how Rama gave refuge to Vibhishana and declared him the king of Lanka. This event shows that true compassion and justice can transform any person and bring them to the path of dharma. Rama's affection for those who seek refuge teaches us that we too should always protect the needy.
