Vibhishana's Surrender Story – Chapter 3: Flight and Search for Refuge

The Flight and the Search for Refuge
Vibhishana's heart was in turmoil after the incident in Ravana's court. He had tried to show the Lanka-king the path of righteousness and justice, but Ravana not only ignored his words but also insulted him. Now, Vibhishana faced a moral dilemma: should he remain with unrighteousness, or should he embark on a quest for truth?
Vibhishana's Departure
Deep darkness had enveloped the night. Lanka city was immersed in sleep, but where was sleep in Vibhishana's eyes? He listened to the voice of his inner conscience and decided to stand against Ravana's injustice. A strong wind blew, as if nature itself was supporting his decision. He took his four attendants with him, whose hearts also held reverence for righteousness and justice, and set off towards the shores of Lanka. His mind was filled with apprehension about the future, but his resolve to walk the path of truth was unwavering.
Vibhishana said to his attendants, "Brothers, this path is difficult, but nothing is greater than truth. We must seek refuge in Lord Shri Rama, the protector of dharma. Are you with me?" His companions replied in one voice, "Master, we are with you. We have complete faith in Lord Rama."
Sugriva's Doubt
When Vibhishana, along with his attendants, reached near the camp of Rama's army by air, a commotion arose in the Vanara army. Sugriva saw them from afar and immediately went to Rama, saying, "O Rama, a Rakshasa has come to your refuge from Lanka. He is Ravana's brother, Vibhishana. It is not wise to trust Rakshasas. Surely, this must be some trick of Ravana." Sugriva doubted that Vibhishana had come to gather secret information about Rama's army. He advised Rama not to allow Vibhishana entry into the camp, as it could pose a threat to the army. Whispers also began among the Vanara army regarding Vibhishana.
Sugriva, worried, said to Rama, "Lord, Rakshasas are deceitful. They are masters of changing their forms. Who knows in whose guise he has come here and might ambush us. We must be cautious."
Conversation Between Hanuman and Rama
Rama remained calm upon hearing Sugriva's doubt. He called Hanuman and asked for his opinion about Vibhishana. Hanuman, who was an ocean of wisdom and discretion, said, "Lord, I believe we should give Vibhishana an opportunity. There is truth in his speech, and his eyes show devotion towards dharma. Ravana has rejected him, which is why he has come to your refuge. It is our duty to protect those who seek refuge." Hanuman argued that it is not right to reject anyone without proper inquiry. He also reminded Rama that he had given shelter to those seeking refuge in the past. Rama listened carefully to Hanuman's words and said, "Hanuman, you speak the truth. It is dharma to be compassionate towards those who seek refuge. We will test Vibhishana, and if he is true, we will surely grant him refuge."
Hanuman bowed at Rama's feet and said, "O Rama, you are the inner-knower. It is by your grace that we are able to distinguish between truth and falsehood. Your decision is paramount."
