Arrival of Mahabali at the Yajna

In the previous chapter, Vamana was adorned as a Brahmachari, bowed at the feet of the Guru, and received Brahmopadesha. Now was the time for the test for which they had descended from Vishnu Loka to the earth. Vamana set forth with their tiny steps towards the grand yajna being performed by King Mahabali.

Vamana Towards the Yajna Shala

On the distant horizon, the sacrificial fire of the yajna shala was blazing, as if welcoming Vamana Brahmachari. The fragrance of incense and ghee filled the atmosphere, and the entire surroundings were purified by the chanting of mantras by the Brahmins. Vamana, even in their form as a child with small matted hair, was radiant with divine light and aura. A serene smile graced their face, and their eyes were filled with compassion and mercy. There was a remarkable firmness in their gait, as if a great warrior was advancing towards their goal. The weight of the universe rested on their small shoulders, yet they were unwavering, like a mountain that remains stable even in the winds.

Vamana said to themselves, "O Narayana, grant me the strength to fulfill this purpose. Inspire me to walk the path of compassion and justice. King Mahabali is a great donor, but let his generosity not turn into pride. I must show him the path of truth."

Mahabali's Welcome

When Vamana reached the yajna shala, Mahabali himself was eager to welcome them. Mahabali's heart was overflowing with generosity, and he never turned away any supplicant empty-handed. Upon seeing Vamana Brahmachari, he recognized that this was no ordinary child. A divine radiance emanated from their face, revealing the part of Vishnu hidden within. Mahabali offered Vamana a seat with utmost respect and humbly said, "O Brahmin child, you are welcome to this yajna. Ask me whatever you desire. I will not disappoint you."

Vamana said in a sweet voice, "O King, I only ask for three paces of land as a donation. Fulfill my wish." There was such simplicity and truth in Vamana's words that Mahabali did not doubt for a moment. He immediately agreed, unaware of how vast these three paces of land would be, and what their consequences would be. Vishnu's divine play is immeasurable, and Mahabali had fallen into this illusion.

The Vow of Three Paces of Land

Mahabali, without thinking, vowed to donate three paces of land to Vamana. At that moment, Vamana's form began to expand. They were no longer an ordinary child, but manifested as Trivikrama, whose one foot measures the earth, the second the heavens, and for the third, Mahabali had to bow his head. The entire yajna shala was astonished to witness this sight. Mahabali kept his word, remaining true to his fame and righteousness, even though he had to lose everything. The purpose of the Vamana avatar was fulfilled, and righteousness triumphed over unrighteousness.
