Vamana Avatar Katha – Chapter 1: Mahabali's Kingdom and Indra's Fear
Mahabali's Kingdom and Indra's Fear
In the previous story, we learned about Prahlad's devotion and Lord Vishnu's Narasimha avatar. After the slaying of Hiranyakashipu, the demons once again began to increase their power. Prahlad's grandson and Virochana's son, Mahabali, now became the king of the demons and established his dominion over the three worlds with his valor and might.
Mahabali's Dominion over Heaven
There was chaos in the heavenly realm. The gods could not withstand Mahabali's valor. Indra's throne was in danger, and the splendor of Amravati had faded. There was an atmosphere of fear and despair all around. Beautiful gardens were now being trampled under the feet of demon soldiers. Apsaras were terrified, and the wives of the gods were immersed in worry. It seemed as if the heavenly realm was losing its dignity.
Lord Indra was distressed, thinking, "Is all this the fruit of my own actions? Will I prove incapable of protecting my realm? Who will save my subjects from this terrible demon king?" He could not understand anything. He was just praying for a way to appear. He was agitated with fear and worry.
The Gods Go to Vishnu
Led by Indra, all the gods went to Lord Vishnu in the Ksheersagar. They saw that Lord Vishnu was reclining on Sheshnag and Mother Lakshmi was serving his feet. The gods humbly bowed to Lord Vishnu and narrated their plight. Indra said tearfully, "O Lord, Mahabali has taken over the three worlds. The heavenly realm is tormented by the atrocities of the demons. Protect us."
Lord Vishnu heard the piteous cry of the gods and smiled. He said, "O Indra, do not worry. To protect righteousness and destroy unrighteousness, I will surely take an avatar. Mahabali will receive the fruit of his actions, and you all will once again rule happily in heaven. Everything will be fine when the time comes, be patient and follow righteousness." The hearts of the gods were filled with peace and hope by these words of Lord Vishnu.
The Beginning of Aditi's Penance
After Lord Vishnu's assurance, the gods returned to their respective realms. Aditi, who was the mother of the gods, was extremely saddened by the plight of her sons. She prayed to Lord Vishnu and decided to undertake severe penance to obtain him as her son. In the next story, we will see how Aditi's penance will inspire Lord Vishnu to take the Vamana avatar and how he will defeat Mahabali.
Summary of Chapter 1: In this chapter, we saw that Mahabali had taken over the heavenly realm, causing the gods to go to Vishnu in fear. Vishnu assured them that he would protect them, leading Aditi to begin penance to obtain Vishnu as her son. The spiritual lesson is that God always protects righteousness and hears the call of his devotees.
