Vaishno Devi Katha – Chapter 6: Vaishnavi Slays Bhairon

The Slaying of Bhairon by Vaishnavi
After years of penance in the Ardhkumari cave, Mother Vaishnavi had taken her spiritual power to its zenith. Bhairon Nath, with his stubbornness and wicked intentions, was still pursuing her. The time had now come for righteousness to triumph over unrighteousness, and for Vaishnavi to fulfill the purpose of her incarnation.
The Fierce Battle Between Mother Vaishnavi and Bhairon Nath
As she emerged from the cave, Vaishnavi saw Bhairon Nath standing there with his army, the flames of lust and anger blazing in his eyes. The atmosphere was tense, as if nature itself was holding its breath for this decisive battle. Mother Vaishnavi's face radiated divine brilliance, her eyes a wondrous confluence of compassion and resolve. She strung an arrow on her bow, its twang resonating through the entire atmosphere.
Bhairon Nath roared, "O ascetic woman! Where will you go now? No one can stop me from enjoying your beauty today!" Vaishnavi replied in a calm voice, "Bhairon, you still have not recognized the truth. This body is mortal, and the soul is immortal. Your lust is leading you towards destruction."
The End of Bhairon Nath and His Liberation
The battle was fierce. Mother Vaishnavi's arrows, with the speed of lightning, were piercing Bhairon's army. Each arrow was like a mantra, destroying sins. Bhairon Nath also put forth all his strength, but his power was waning before the divine radiance of Mother Vaishnavi. Finally, Mother Vaishnavi shot an arrow that struck directly into Bhairon Nath's heart.
Bhairon Nath screamed and fell to the ground. In the moment of death, he realized his mistake. He begged Mother Vaishnavi for forgiveness, "Mother, I made a mistake. I did not recognize your divine form. Forgive me." Mother Vaishnavi said in a voice filled with compassion, "Bhairon, though late, you have gained knowledge of the truth. Your sins are washed away, and you will attain liberation. It will be your penance that every devotee who visits my temple must also have your darshan, only then will their pilgrimage be considered complete." At that very moment, Bhairon Nath breathed his last.
Towards the Establishment of the Vaishno Devi Temple
The slaying of Bhairon Nath was a symbol of the establishment of righteousness. Mother Vaishnavi had ended evil from the earth. Now it was time to create a sacred place for her devotees, where they could experience peace and liberation. This event was the first step towards the establishment of the Vaishno Devi temple, which would continue to inspire devotees for ages to come. In the next chapter, we will see how Mother Vaishno Devi established her divine temple on the Trikuta mountain and resided there forever for her devotees.
Summary of Chapter 6: In this chapter, we saw how Mother Vaishnavi established righteousness by slaying Bhairon Nath. The slaying of Bhairon teaches us that ego and lust have a bad end, and liberation lies in recognizing the truth. By granting liberation to Bhairon, Mother Vaishnavi also taught that forgiveness is the greatest virtue.
