Chapter 5 of the Vaishno Devi Katha — Penance in Ardhkunwari Cave. Vaishnavi performs penance in the Ardhkunwari cave and takes refuge in Yogmaya to escape Bhairon Nath.

Penance in the Ardhkumari Cave

After achieving victory in the fierce battle with Trilok Nath, Vaishnavi realized that Bhairon Nath's pursuit was still ongoing. She needed a peaceful and safe place to continue her penance and fulfill her divine purpose. Therefore, she continued her journey towards the Trikuta mountain, where she was about to take refuge in a wondrous cave.

Entering the Ardhkumari Cave

Climbing the heights of Trikuta mountain, Vaishnavi was surrounded by exhaustion and anxiety. Yet, there was a divine radiance on her face, reflecting her unwavering faith and devotion to the Supreme Being. Slowly, she spotted the entrance to a narrow cave, known as Ardhkumari. The mouth of the cave resembled a mother's womb, serene and safe. Vaishnavi felt as if Mother Bhagwati herself was calling her into her lap.

"Mother, is this the place where I must complete my penance? Is this the place where I must gather my strength to end that hateful Bhairon Nath?" Vaishnavi questioned in her mind. She immediately felt an inner peace, as if Mother Bhagwati had assured her that she was safe and would achieve her goal.

Vaishnavi's Penance

Inside the Ardhkumari cave, Vaishnavi began her penance. She settled herself and became absorbed in meditation. Her eyes were closed, but her mind was connected to the cosmic energy. Day and night, she chanted the mantras of Mother Bhagwati, her voice echoing in the cave, sanctifying the atmosphere. Her penance was infusing the cave with a divine power, protecting her from external dangers. She renounced food and subsisted only on fruits and water. Her body was weakening, but her resolve was unwavering.

Mother Bhagwati was pleased with Vaishnavi's penance. She bestowed upon her a part of her divine power, making her aura even brighter. Vaishnavi began to have premonitions of future events; she knew that Bhairon Nath would try to reach the cave. Mother Bhagwati blessed her to be patient and to use her power at the right time.

Bhairon Nath's Arrival

Bhairon Nath, who had been relentlessly pursuing Vaishnavi, finally reached the Ardhkumari cave. Reaching the cave's entrance, he challenged Vaishnavi. "Vaishnavi, where have you hidden? How long will you run from me? Today, I will catch you!" His voice was filled with anger and lust, polluting the atmosphere of the cave.

Vaishnavi heard Bhairon Nath's voice, but she was not disturbed. She did not break her concentration and continued her penance. Then, with the power of Mother Bhagwati, Vaishnavi narrowed the entrance of the cave. Bhairon Nath panted as he tried to enter the cave, but he could not succeed. Vaishnavi mentally thanked Mother Bhagwati and began preparing for her next step. She knew that the time for Bhairon Nath's end was near.
