Sundarkand – Chapter 1: Hanuman's Mighty Leap

Hanuman's Mighty Leap
The armies of Rama and Ravana stood face to face, as if the end of the world was nigh. Crossing the ocean to invade Lanka seemed an impossible task. An atmosphere of worry and despair prevailed, with every Vanara warrior doubting their strength. Whose arms possessed the power to leap across this vast ocean?
Jambavan Awakens Hanuman's Sense of Duty
On the ocean shore, the Vanara army was steeped in despair. Jambavan, who was the most superior in wisdom and experience, sensed everyone's sadness. He looked gently towards Hanuman. Hanuman, who sat quietly in a corner, was unaware of his own incredible abilities. His eyes were lost in the void, as if deep in thought. Jambavan's heart filled with affection and concern for Hanuman. He knew that only Hanuman could make this impossible task possible.
Jambavan said in a soft voice, "Hanuman! You have forgotten who you are. You are the son of the wind god, the beloved of Anjani. You possess immeasurable strength, which you cannot even fathom. Do you remember, in your childhood, mistaking the sun for a fruit, you flew into the sky to eat it? You have the power to leap across this ocean and accomplish Rama's mission." Jambavan's words echoed in Hanuman's heart.
Hanuman Ascends Mahendra Mountain
Jambavan's words infused Hanuman with new energy. He remembered his strength, his duty. A spark lit up in his eyes. Roaring, he turned towards Mahendra Mountain. The mountain seemed to stand with its high peaks raised, as if welcoming Hanuman. Hanuman took a deep breath and, chanting 'Jai Shri Ram', leaped onto the mountain. The mountain trembled with the impact of his footsteps.
As Hanuman placed his weight on the mountain, the gods showered flowers. Siddhas, sages, and ascetics began to praise Hanuman. The wind god was pleased, for his son was about to undertake a great task. The entire atmosphere became filled with devotion to Rama through Hanuman's strength and devotion. Hanuman knew that Rama's name was his greatest strength and with its support, he could do anything.
Surasa's Test
Hanuman made a mighty leap from Mahendra Mountain. Flying through the sky, Surasa, the mother of serpents, decided to test him. She opened her gigantic mouth and tried to stop Hanuman. Surasa's mouth was so large that it had the capacity to swallow the entire sky. She said to Hanuman, "It is the command of the gods that I swallow you all. Therefore, enter my mouth."
Hanuman acted with intelligence and humility. He said, "Mother, I am Rama's messenger and I am going on his mission. Please let me go." Surasa did not agree. Then Hanuman began to increase the size of his body. Surasa also widened her mouth further. When Surasa's mouth became very large, Hanuman immediately became very small and entered her mouth, then emerged instantly. Surasa understood that Hanuman was truly powerful and blessed him that his mission would be accomplished. This reveals Hanuman's intelligence, strength, and devotion. He was a true servant of Rama and capable of overcoming every obstacle.
Summary of Chapter 1: In this chapter, we saw how Jambavan reminded Hanuman of his dormant strength and inspired him to leap across to Ravana's Lanka. Surasa's test highlighted Hanuman's intelligence and capability, demonstrating that every obstacle can be overcome with devotion and wisdom.
