The Event of Samudra Manthan

After being freed from Yayati's curse, both the gods and the demons intensely felt the need for Amrita (nectar of immortality). Maharishi Shukracharya, the guru of the Daityas and Asuras, had witnessed the glory of Indra and knew that eventually, the gods would defeat the demons. Amrita was the only solution that could grant immortality to the Asuras. Thus, the plan for Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) was conceived, in which both gods and demons participated, albeit with different objectives.

The Beginning of the Churning

Both the gods and the demons were astonished by the vastness of the Ksheer Sagar (ocean of milk). Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod, and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. On one side were the gods, and on the other, the demons, proud of their radiance and strength. The process of Samudra Manthan began. The churning of Mount Mandara caused huge waves to rise in the ocean. Aquatic creatures fled in fear. The radiance of the gods and the strength of the demons, together, began to churn the ocean. There was chaos everywhere, the hissing of Vasuki the serpent, and the display of the combined power of gods and demons. In their hope for Amrita, they were all blinded, seeing only one goal – immortality!

Bali, the king of the Asuras, thought, "What are the gods thinking? Do they think they will attain immortality? We, the Asuras, will never let this wish of theirs be fulfilled. We will snatch the Amrita with our strength and bring the gods down once again."

The Emergence of Halahala

As the churning deepened, many objects began to emerge from the ocean. First emerged Kamadhenu cow, then Uchchaihshravas horse, then Airavata elephant, and many more. However, the most terrifying object that emerged was the Halahala poison. It was so dreadful that its flames made the entire creation cry out in distress. Both gods and demons were terrified. Everyone began to faint from the terrible smell of Halahala. No one could find any way to escape. The flames of Halahala were ready to consume the creation.

Shukracharya, through his yogic practices, sensed this crisis. He knew that if this poison was not stopped, the destruction of creation was certain. Although he was the guru of the Asuras, his heart was always ready for the welfare of creation. He mentally meditated on Lord Shiva and prayed to him to save this creation. His prayer had so much power that Lord Shiva immediately appeared from Mount Kailash.

Vishapana by Shiva

Lord Shiva collected the Halahala poison with his trident and took it in his palms. All the gods and demons watched in amazement. Lord Shiva, chanting "Om Namah Shivaya," drank that terrible poison. The poison settled in his throat, and his throat turned blue, which is why he is called Neelkanth (the blue-throated one). Lord Shiva saved creation from destruction by sacrificing his own life. All the gods and demons began to praise Lord Shiva. The sacrifice made by Lord Shiva to save creation was unparalleled. After this, the gods and demons resumed the churning. Amrita also emerged from the churning, for which all this effort was being made, but another war for that Amrita was yet to come.
