Shiva Parvati Vivah Katha – Chapter 4: Parvati's Test and Steadfastness

Parvati's Test and Perseverance
In the previous chapter, we saw the birth of Parvati and the beginning of her devotion to Shiva. Maina and Himalaya's daughter, Parvati, was eager from childhood to have Shiva as her husband. Her devotion was increasing day by day, and her penance shook the three worlds. Now, Lord Shiva was about to create a play to test his devotee.
Shiva as a Brahmin
Peace prevailed on Mount Kailash. Lord Shiva gathered his matted hair, applied ash, and assumed the form of a radiant Brahmin. His radiance was such that ordinary humans could not even look at him. There was an unfathomable depth of knowledge in his eyes and a calm smile on his face. He wanted to experience firsthand the depth of Parvati's devotion, to see if her devotion was merely a show, or truly unwavering. Assuming the form of a Brahmin, Shiva set out towards Parvati's hermitage, where she was absorbed in her penance.
Shiva, in the form of a Brahmin, thought in his mind, "It is necessary to test Parvati's devotion. If she is truly so steadfast, then no one will be able to remove her from her path. It is also necessary to see whether she gets caught in the web of worldly illusions or not."
Parvati's Test
As soon as Shiva, in the form of a Brahmin, reached Parvati's hermitage, he saw that Parvati was deeply absorbed in penance. Her eyes were closed, and she was constantly chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya'. The Brahmin gently said 'Narayan Narayan'. Parvati opened her eyes and found a radiant Brahmin standing before her. She immediately got up, bowed to the Brahmin, and asked about his well-being. The Brahmin asked her the reason for her penance.
"O Brahmin deity," Parvati said humbly, "I am performing this penance to obtain Lord Shiva as my husband. From childhood, my mind has been absorbed in him, and my life is dedicated to him." The Brahmin said with a smile, "But Parvati, do you know that Shiva is a fierce ascetic? He has no home, no family. He lives in the cremation ground, smears himself with ash, and is surrounded by ghosts and spirits. How will you, so delicate, be able to live with him?"
Parvati said angrily, "O Brahmin! How can you say such things about Shiva? He is the lord of the three worlds, the beginning and the end. His form may look ordinary, but his glory is infinite. You are committing a great sin by insulting him in front of me!"
Parvati's Steadfast Devotion
Shiva, in the form of a Brahmin, took a sigh of satisfaction seeing Parvati's steadfastness. He said, "O Parvati, I was only testing you. In reality, I am Shiva." As soon as he said this, the form of the Brahmin disappeared and Lord Shiva appeared in his true form. Parvati prostrated and fell at his feet. Shiva lifted her up and said, "O Parvati, your devotion and steadfastness have won me over. I am ready to marry you."
Parvati's joy knew no bounds. Her years of penance had been successful. Shiva's love and grace were showering upon her. She realized that anything can be achieved with true devotion and determination. Shiva assured her that they would marry soon at the appropriate time.
Summary of Chapter 4: In this chapter, Lord Shiva tested Parvati's devotion by assuming the form of a Brahmin. Parvati demonstrated her unwavering faith and determination. This test proved that even God can be controlled with true devotion and dedication. It also shows that faith is always tested and steadfast devotees always succeed.
