Birth and Devotion of Parvati

The deities, distressed by the terror of Tarakasura, went to Brahma for refuge, where they learned of the prophecy of Tarakasura's slaying by the son of Shiva and Parvati. Now, the deities' ray of hope was towards the birth of Parvati.

Himavan's Penance and the Birth of Parvati

While the deities were worried, Himavan, the king of the Himalayas, and his wife, Menaka, began rigorous penance to obtain a son. Their hearts were filled with unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva. They would wake up every morning and bathe in the Ganges, chant Shiva mantras, and donate to the poor. Menaka, in particular, remained absorbed in her penance, praying to Lord Shiva every moment for a daughter. The intensity of their penance stirred even the deities, as they knew that this was no ordinary couple, but the parents of the goddess herself.

Menaka said to Himavan, "My lord, my heart tells me that our penance will surely bear fruit. I am confident that Lord Shiva will hear our prayer and bless us with a daughter who will delight all three worlds." Himavan replied, "Beloved, your devotion and faith are unique. I am also confident that our prayers will be heard. But we must remain free from ego and remain constantly dedicated to the Lord's feet."

Parvati's Upbringing and Shiva Devotion

The auspicious moment arrived, and Menaka gave birth to a wonderful, radiant girl. The girl was named Parvati, which means 'daughter of the mountain'. Parvati's beauty was unique, as if Goddess Lakshmi herself had taken birth in the house of the mountain king. As Parvati grew older, her heart became filled with devotion to Lord Shiva. She would spend hours in meditation, chanting Shiva mantras, and listening to his stories.

Parvati asked her mother, "Mother, why is Lord Shiva so great? Why does he perform such rigorous penance?" Menaka lovingly replied, "Daughter, Lord Shiva is the protector of creation. His penance is not only for himself, but for the welfare of the entire world. He is an ocean of love and compassion, and whoever worships him with a true heart, he surely rewards them." Parvati's mind sank even deeper into Shiva devotion. She became determined to dedicate her life to Lord Shiva.

Arrival of Narada Muni and Prophecy

One day, Devrishi Narada Muni arrived at Himavan's hermitage. Himavan and Menaka gave him a grand welcome. Narada Muni saw Parvati and prophesied that this girl was no ordinary being, but an incarnation of Adi Shakti herself, and her marriage with Lord Shiva was certain. Hearing this, Himavan and Menaka were overjoyed, but they also knew that Lord Shiva remained absorbed in his penance.

Narada Muni said to Himavan, "Mountain King, your daughter is no ordinary being. She is the embodiment of Adi Shakti herself, and her marriage to Lord Shiva is certain. But this path will be difficult. Parvati will have to perform rigorous penance, only then will she be able to attain Lord Shiva." Narada Muni also blessed Parvati and inspired her to walk on the path of Shiva devotion. Narada Muni's words filled Parvati's mind with even more enthusiasm. Now the only goal of her life was to attain Lord Shiva, no matter how many difficulties she had to face for it.
