Chapter 2 of the Shiva Parvati Marriage Story — Tarakasura's terror and the prophecy. All three worlds are suffering from Tarakasura's tyranny, and the gods learn of the prophecy that only Shiva's son can kill him.

Terror of Tarakasura and Prophecy

After Sati's self-immolation, a wave of sorrow swept through the three worlds. Lord Shiva became an ascetic and was absorbed in deep meditation, and creation seemed to come to a standstill. However, amidst this peace, a terrible storm was about to rise, named Tarakasura.

The Empire of Demons and the Defeat of the Gods

Taking advantage of Shiva's absorption in meditation due to his separation from Sati, a powerful demon named Tarakasura began to spread his terror over the three worlds. He had immense strength in his arms and had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma after rigorous penance, according to which only a son of Shiva could kill him. Tarakasura knew that Shiva was absorbed in asceticism, so his greed to become immortal increased even more. The army of demons invaded heaven, and Indra and other gods were defeated. The heavenly realm was groaning under the tyranny of Tarakasura. Sacrifices began to be disrupted, religion began to be destroyed, and unrighteousness prevailed. There was chaos on earth, sages were terrified, and their penance was being disturbed.

Indra, extremely sad and disappointed, went to Brihaspati. "Gurudev," Indra said, "the throne of heaven is shaking due to the tyranny of Tarakasura. Is there no way we can get rid of this crisis?" Brihaspati replied, "Devraj, Tarakasura has received a special boon from Brahma. Only a son of Shiva can kill him. We must go to Lord Brahma himself."

Prayer to Brahma

Indra and other gods reached Brahma's abode. They joined their hands and prayed to Brahma, "O Pitamah, Tarakasura has created havoc in the three worlds by misusing his boon. The gods have been defeated, the sages are terrified, and religion is being destroyed. Please show us the way to get rid of this crisis." Brahma was moved upon hearing the pain of the gods. He said in a serious tone, "I had given the boon to Tarakasura, but I did not know that he would be so tyrannical. My words cannot be false. Tarakasura's end is only possible through the son of Shiva." The gods were disappointed. Then Brahma further said, "But do not be disappointed. Lord Shiva is inactive without Shakti. Until Shakti is reborn and marries Lord Shiva, the birth of Shiva's son is impossible. Therefore, all of you together worship Adishakti, so that she may be reborn as Parvati and marry Lord Shiva."

A ray of hope arose in the gods upon hearing Brahma's words. They together began to praise Adishakti. They knew that this task was difficult, but it was necessary to save the three worlds from the tyranny of Tarakasura. Due to Lord Shiva's absorption in meditation, nature was also calm and sad. Gradually, life began to be infused into the atmosphere again through the worship of the gods.

Prophecy of Shiva's Son and Ray of Hope

Brahma also told the gods that Shiva's son would be wonderfully mighty. He would not only kill Tarakasura, but also restore the lost glory of the gods. He will lead the army of the gods and establish righteousness. Hearing this prophecy, a new ray of hope arose in the hearts of the gods. They became convinced that the end of their sorrows was near. Now their only goal was to inspire Adishakti to be reborn as Parvati and to get her married to Lord Shiva.

The gods now proceeded towards the Himalayas, with the hope that Mother Parvati would be born there and pave the way for the welfare of creation. They knew that this penance was difficult, but it was necessary to get rid of the terror of Tarakasura. The welfare of the three worlds was possible only through the reunion of Shiva's grace and power.

Summary of Chapter 2: This chapter describes the tyranny of Tarakasura and the suffering of the gods. Brahma's prophecy reveals that only Shiva's son can kill Tarakasura, which brings hope to the gods. This chapter sets the stage for the next chapter, which will describe the birth of Parvati and her devotion.
