Sati's Sacrifice and Grief

Peace reigned on Mount Kailash, as if nature itself was absorbed in the love of Mahadev and Parvati. After the marriage, Sati was living a joyful life with her husband, Shiva. But fate had something else written, an unfortunate series of events that would shake the three worlds.

Organization of Daksha Yagna

Prajapati Daksha organized a grand Yagna. This Yagna was a display of his power and prosperity, in which he invited all the gods, sages, and kings. The grandeur of the Yagna site was a sight to behold. Canopies adorned with gold, fragrant incense, and the sound of mantras were sanctifying the entire atmosphere. Daksha's arrogant voice was echoing in every direction, he was trying to prove himself the best. The deities were adorned with their divine ornaments, and the sages were chanting Vedic mantras. There was a festive atmosphere everywhere, with only one thing missing - the absence of Shiva.

A question arose in Sati's mind, "Why didn't my father invite me and my husband? Is he deliberately insulting us?" She sought permission from Shiva to attend her father's Yagna, "O Mahadev, my mind is restless. I want to meet my mother and sisters. If you permit, I want to go to Daksha's Yagna." Shiva explained that it is not appropriate to go uninvited, "Sati, going to someone's house without an invitation is disrespectful. Daksha does not respect us, so going there is futile."

Sati's Insult and Self-Immolation

Sati, adamant on her insistence, finally reached her father's Yagna despite Shiva's reluctance. There she saw that all the gods were participating in the Yagna, but there was no place for her husband Shiva. Daksha condemned Shiva and spoke harsh words to him, which filled Sati's heart with anger and sorrow. Daksha said, "That matted-haired ash-smeared one is not worthy of coming here. He is an Aghori living in the cremation ground, what business does he have in my divine Yagna?" Sati could not bear the insult to her husband.

Filled with anger, Sati rebuked her father, "By insulting my husband, you have insulted the entire universe. I am ashamed to be your daughter." She jumped into the same Yagna Kund and sacrificed her life. It was a scene that stunned all the gods. The joy of the Yagna turned into sorrow. There was chaos, and everyone started talking about Sati's sacrifice.

Shiva's Wrath and Tandava

When Shiva received the news of Sati's self-immolation, his anger erupted like a volcano. His third eye opened, and the entire earth began to tremble with his rage. He created Veerabhadra from his matted hair, who destroyed Daksha's Yagna and beheaded Daksha. Shiva picked up Sati's mortal body and began to perform the Tandava dance in anger. The Tandava created a state of destruction in the three worlds. The gods were in turmoil, and they ran to Lord Vishnu for help. Vishnu divided Sati's body into pieces with the Sudarshan Chakra, and the places where those pieces fell became Shaktipeeths. Shiva's grief and anger were not subsiding, and the entire universe was afflicted by his sorrow.

This devastating event will pave the way for the terror of Tarakasura, as Shiva's grief will weaken the power of the gods, giving Tarakasura the opportunity to rule over the three worlds. In the next chapter, we will learn about the terror of Tarakasura and the prophecy to end him.
