Satyanarayan Katha – Chapter 4: The King's Daughter and Salvation

The King's Daughter and Salvation
The wealthy merchant had set out on his journey. The grace of Lord Satyanarayan remained upon him, but his test was yet to come. In the previous chapter, we saw how he chose greed, forgetting the Satyanarayan Vrat. Now, let's see how God gives him an opportunity to correct his mistake.
Princess Leelavati's Compassion
Merchant Ratnakar's ship was heading towards a distant land. The sea was calm, and the stars were twinkling in the sky. Weary from the long journey, the merchant stopped near a large city. This was the city of the kingdom whose princess, Leelavati, was known far and wide for her kindness and wisdom. Princess Leelavati often helped the poor and needy. Her heart was full of compassion, and she considered everyone's sorrow as her own.
Just then, she saw her maid standing anxiously. "What happened, maid? Why do you look so worried?" the princess asked. The maid replied, "Princess, I saw a merchant who looked very tired and dejected. His ship also needs repair. I feel sorry for him." Princess Leelavati immediately said, "We must help him. Bring him to the palace."
Ratnakar Realizes His Mistake
Princess Leelavati respectfully summoned merchant Ratnakar to the palace. She asked Ratnakar about his journey. Ratnakar told the princess his entire story, including the mistake of forgetting the Satyanarayan Vrat. As soon as he described his mistake, he deeply regretted his foolishness. He remembered how he had disrespected the Prasad of Lord Satyanarayan. He understood that he alone was the cause of his current difficulty.
He said to himself, "Oh God, what a big mistake I have made! I did not observe your Vrat because of my greed. Forgive me. I promise you that I will correct my mistake and observe your Vrat properly." Princess Leelavati consoled him and said, "Do not worry, merchant. Lord Satyanarayan is merciful. He will surely forgive your mistake. Just repent with all your heart." By the grace of Lord Vishnu, Princess Leelavati made Ratnakar realize his mistake and showed him the path to atonement.
Re-organizing the Vrat and Receiving the Fruits
Ratnakar got his ship repaired with the help of Princess Leelavati. He decided to organize the Satyanarayan Vrat. He called the Brahmins, gave alms to the poor, and listened to the Satyanarayan Katha properly. This time, he observed the Vrat with complete faith and devotion. After the Katha ended, he accepted the Prasad and distributed it to everyone. As soon as he concluded the Vrat, he got all his lost wealth back. His ship was filled with jewels and riches.
Ratnakar was now a changed man. His heart was freed from greed, and true faith in Lord Satyanarayan had awakened in him. He was grateful to Princess Leelavati, who had shown him the right path. Ratnakar thanked the princess and continued on his journey. Later, Ratnakar propagated the Satyanarayan Vrat, which benefited many people. Now, Ratnakar set off towards his city, but he did not know that Kali's test awaited him, which seeks to measure the depth of his devotion.
Summary of Chapter 4: In this chapter, we saw how Ratnakar realizes his mistake, Princess Leelavati helps him, and he atones for his sins by performing the Satyanarayan Vrat again. The spiritual message of this chapter is that prayers made with repentance and faith are always heard, and God forgives his devotees.
