Chapter 5 of Sati Katha — Sati's Self-Immolation. Angered by the insult to her husband Shiva, Sati immolates herself by jumping into the sacrificial fire.

Sati's Self-Immolation

Upon hearing the insult to Lord Shiva at Daksha Prajapati's yajna, a flame of anger ignited in Sati's heart. The disrespect shown to her husband, and that too by her own father, was unbearable for Sati. She knew that this insult had to be avenged, but how?

Anger from Shiva's Insult

Sati's mind was burning like a flame. Not inviting Shiva to Daksha's yajna and then publicly ridiculing him was an insult not only to her husband but to Sati herself. Fire gleamed in her eyes, her voice trembled. She resolved in her mind that this insult would surely be retaliated. She looked at the yajna being performed amidst gods and sages with disdain, as if it were not a yajna but a center of unrighteousness. Her soul was torn between love for Lord Shiva and anger towards her father.

Sati said to herself, "What kind of yajna is this, in which my Lord, my life, my adored deity has no place? Has my father become blind? Does he not know that Shiva is truth, Shiva is eternal?"

Final Dispute with Daksha

An enraged Sati reached her father Daksha in the yajna hall. In a loud voice, she said, "Father! What have you done? You have insulted your son-in-law and my husband, Lord Shiva. Have you forgotten that he is the Lord of the three worlds, the master of the entire universe? You have also insulted me by inviting me to this yajna. Does a daughter need an invitation to visit her father's home? Shame on me that I was born in your house." Sati's words echoed in the yajna hall, and all the gods and sages present were stunned. Daksha replied with arrogance, "You ran after a mad ascetic, so you have to bear all this. Shiva is an Aghori, he has no place in this yajna."

Sati took a deep breath and said, "Father, by insulting Lord Shiva, you have insulted not only me but the entire universe. You will surely have to face the consequences." Sati looked at her father with a compassionate gaze, for she knew that Daksha's ego had stolen his intellect. Her words carried sorrow along with anger, the sorrow of her father's downfall.

Sati's Self-Immolation

Sati looked at her father one last time and then generated a fierce fire around herself. "If I am your daughter," she declared, "then I cannot keep this body that you have given me. I renounce this body, this insignificant life." Saying this, Sati offered herself into the yajna kund. The flames of fire reached the sky, and Sati's mortal body turned to ashes. There was an uproar among the gods and sages. Daksha did not even survive to regret his actions.

This sacrifice of Sati was a symbol of the victory of love, devotion, and truth. Through her self-immolation, she proved that enduring the insult of one's husband is worse than death for a wife. This sacrifice, in time, marked the beginning of a new era, where the victory of good over evil was certain. By sacrificing her life, Sati established the glory of Lord Shiva in the universe.

Shiva's Wrath and the Beginning of Destruction

As this tragic news reached Lord Shiva, a flame of anger erupted from his third eye. That anger was so fierce that it shook the entire universe. Shiva created Virabhadra from his matted locks, who was ready to destroy Daksha's yajna and punish him. Sati's self-immolation had awakened the destructive form of Lord Shiva, after which annihilation was inevitable. Now Daksha's destruction and Shiva's wrath would shake the entire world, the beginning of which will be in the next chapter.

Summary of Chapter 5: Sati, enraged by the insult to her husband Shiva, goes to her father Daksha's yajna and argues with him. Unable to bear the disrespect shown to her husband, she immolates herself by jumping into the yajna kund. This event shows that true love and devotion are above any insult, and religious actions are meaningful only when they are accompanied by love and respect.
