Saraswati Mata Katha – Chapter 5: Worship and Moral Education

Worship and Moral Education
In the previous chapter, we learned about the various avatars of Goddess Saraswati. Narad Muni heard from Lord Vishnu the description of the forms of the Goddess that established knowledge and art on Earth. Now we will learn about the significance of Saraswati Puja and how respecting knowledge and learning aids in the adherence to truth and righteousness. This chapter will tell us about the method of worshipping Mother Saraswati and the moral lessons derived from it.
The Beginning of Saraswati Puja
The sun was illuminating the eastern direction with its golden rays. The children of the village, adorned in new clothes, holding flowers and puja thalis in their hands, were running enthusiastically towards the school. Today was the day of Saraswati Puja, and the entire village was waiting for Mother Saraswati's arrival. The school was decorated with colorful flowers and mango leaves. The fragrance of incense and agarbatti filled the atmosphere, bringing peace and devotion to the mind. Chants of "Jai Maa Saraswati" echoed all around.
The priest began chanting mantras, "Om Shri Saraswati Namah. Vidyarupa Vishalaksi Vidyam Dehi Namostute." The teacher said to the children, "Today is dedicated to Mother Saraswati, the Goddess of knowledge. We should seek her blessings for intellect, learning, and wisdom. Prayers offered with true faith and devotion are never in vain." A little girl, Radhika, whispered to her friend, "I am scared, will Mother really hear our prayers?" Her friend replied, "She surely will, Radhika. Just pray with your heart."
Respect for Knowledge and Learning
After the puja ritual concluded, the priest described the glory of Mother Saraswati. He said, "Mother Saraswati is not just the Goddess of learning, but she is also a symbol of truth, justice, and righteousness. We should gain knowledge from her and use it for the welfare of others. Humility and a spirit of service are essential along with learning. A person who respects knowledge is always successful in life." Then he narrated a story of a poor woodcutter who, through his hard work and perseverance, acquired knowledge and became the most learned person in his village. Due to his wisdom and love for justice, he was appointed as a minister in the king's court.
The grace of Mother Saraswati is immense. She bestows knowledge, intellect, and wisdom upon her devotees. Her worship inspires humans to speak the truth, follow righteousness, and help others. Blessed by Mother Saraswati, the woodcutter not only made his own life successful but also did a lot for his village and country. The priest said, "We should all take inspiration from that woodcutter and follow the path shown by Mother Saraswati." He also explained that merely reading books is not knowledge; rather, embodying that knowledge in life is true knowledge.
Adherence to Truth and Righteousness
Addressing the children, the village head said, "Today, we have all worshipped Mother Saraswati. Now we must take a vow that we will always stand by the truth and walk on the path of righteousness. We must respect our parents and elders. This will be true Saraswati Puja." The children raised their hands together and took this vow. From that day onwards, all the children of the village resolved to study regularly and practice good conduct. The light of knowledge began to spread in the village, and happiness prevailed everywhere. Mother Saraswati bestowed the boon of knowledge and learning upon that village.
Thus, the story of Mother Saraswati gives us the message of the importance of knowledge and learning, as well as the adherence to truth and righteousness. It teaches us that the purpose of learning is not just personal advancement but also the welfare of society. With the grace of Mother Saraswati, we can all make our lives successful and meaningful. In the upcoming chapters, we will listen to the stories of other goddesses and gain knowledge from them as well.
Summary of Chapter 5: In this chapter, we learned the importance of Saraswati Puja and understood how respecting knowledge and learning aids in the adherence to truth and righteousness. We saw that worshipping Mother Saraswati with true faith and devotion brings success and happiness in life.
