Santoshi Mata Katha – Chapter 1: Birth of Santoshi Mata

The Birth of Santoshi Mata
There was a continuous conflict between the gods and demons. An atmosphere of unrest prevailed in the three worlds. In such a situation, it was necessary for a new power to emerge to hear the prayers of the devotees and protect righteousness.
Lord Ganesha Consumes the Divine Flame
On Mount Kailash, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were immersed in bliss. At the same time, hearing the prayers of the gods, Lord Ganesha realized that a new energy was needed in creation. Compassion welled up in his heart, and he felt that a power that bestows contentment upon devotees should be born. There was a wonderful peace in the atmosphere, as if nature itself was waiting for that divine moment.
Lord Ganesha manifested two radiant flames with his divine vision. Those flames were so intense that their light illuminated the entire Kailash. He took those flames in his hands and consumed them. "O Mahadeva," Lord Ganesha said to himself, "I bear these flames for the welfare of creation." A divine radiance shone on his face.
The Desire of Riddhi and Siddhi
Ganesha's two wives, Riddhi and Siddhi, were witnessing all this. The desire to become mothers became strong in their hearts. They went to Lord Ganesha and humbly said, "O Lord, we have heard that you have consumed two divine flames. We wish that these flames be born as mothers, so that we may receive their maternal affection." There was a feeling of love and devotion in Riddhi and Siddhi's eyes. Both of them wished to see a compassionate power as their mother.
Lord Ganesha smiled and said, "Your wish will surely be fulfilled. These flames will be born as a goddess who will bestow contentment and happiness upon devotees. Her name will be Santoshi Mata." Riddhi and Siddhi's hearts were filled with joy. They became convinced that a compassionate power in the form of Santoshi Mata would surely come into their lives.
The Birth and Naming of Santoshi Mata
By the grace of Lord Ganesha, two divine daughters were born from the wombs of Riddhi and Siddhi. Both daughters were extremely radiant, and a divine peace was reflected on their faces. An atmosphere of joy spread all around. The gods showered flowers, and the Gandharvas played melodious music. It was an extremely auspicious occasion.
Lord Ganesha called his daughters to him and named them. One daughter was named Santoshi, as she was the bestower of contentment upon devotees. With the birth of Santoshi Mata, joy and peace spread throughout the three worlds. Devotees received a new hope that Santoshi Mata would fulfill all their desires and bestow upon them happiness and prosperity. By the grace of Santoshi Mata, contentment and peace began to reside in people's lives.
