The War for Amrita

In the previous chapter, The Revelation of Gems, we saw the wonderful gems that emerged during the churning of the ocean. The arrival of Lakshmi, the appearance of the horse Uchchaihshrava, and finally the rise of Dhanvantari Vaidya with the Amrita Kalash – all this was an important moment for the gods and demons. But the real challenge was yet to come: obtaining that nectar and distributing it.

The Struggle for the Amrita Kalash

As soon as Dhanvantari came out of the ocean with the Amrita Kalash, there was chaos among the gods and demons. Both were desperate to attain immortality. The demons tried to snatch the Kalash with great cruelty. Amidst fierce roars, the demons attacked the gods. It was a fierce battle, in which both gods and demons were ready to risk their lives for the nectar. Swords were clashing, maces were spinning, and rivers of blood were flowing everywhere. Worry was clearly visible on the faces of the gods and greed on the faces of the demons.

Indra, enraged, raised his Vajra and roared, "Demons! This nectar is the right of the gods. Do not try to snatch it, otherwise the consequences will be very bad!" In response, the demon king Bali said with a terrible laugh, "Indra! You only know how to talk. Power is everything, and we demons will obtain it by force!"

Vishnu's Mohini Form

The war was escalating and it became clear that equal distribution of nectar was not possible in this way. The gods prayed to Lord Vishnu. They knew that only Vishnu could solve this problem. Moved by his compassion, Lord Vishnu assumed a wonderful form - the form of Mohini. Mohini was an extremely beautiful and attractive woman. Her beauty was such that whoever saw her was mesmerized. As soon as Mohini appeared, the war stopped. Both demons and gods were stunned by her beauty.

Mohini said in a sweet voice, "Gods and demons, I have come here to distribute the nectar equally. I will give nectar to both sides with my impartiality." The play of Lord Vishnu was infinite. In the form of Mohini, she trapped the demons in the web of her beauty.

The Deceit of the Demons

Mohini asked the gods and demons to sit in separate rows. The demons were so blinded by Mohini's beauty that they obeyed her without thinking. Mohini started giving nectar to the gods first. An Asura named Rahu became suspicious. He disguised himself as a god and sat in the row of gods and started drinking nectar. The Sun and Moon recognized Rahu and immediately informed Mohini.

As soon as Rahu swallowed a drop of nectar, Lord Vishnu severed his head from his torso with his Sudarshan Chakra. But by then the nectar had gone into his throat, so he became immortal. Rahu's head became known as Rahu and the torso as Ketu. Rahu and Ketu have since become enemies of the Sun and Moon, and periodically eclipse them. This incident made it clear that the deceit of the demons can never succeed, and the victory of truth is inevitable. Now it remains to be seen what effect this anomaly has on the gods.
