Shiva's Sacrifice

As soon as the Halahal poison emerged during the churning of the ocean, chaos erupted in all three worlds. Both the gods and demons, terrified by the intense heat and destructive power of the poison, began to flee in all directions. The entire creation was threatened with annihilation, and there was only one ray of hope to save it from this crisis - Lord Shiva!

The Flame of Poison

The flame of the Halahal poison was so intense that even the rays of the sun dimmed, poisonous gas spread in the atmosphere, and the earth began to burn. Gods, demons, Gandharvas, Nagas, and humans, all were afflicted by the effects of the poison. Screams and groans echoed everywhere. An atmosphere of fear and despair prevailed. Creatures felt as if the apocalypse had arrived. Lord Shiva, seated on Mount Kailash, saw this great destruction with his divine vision, and compassion arose in his heart.

Lord Shiva thought to himself, "If I do not stop this poison, it will incinerate the entire creation. My devotees are crying out for help. How can I save my devotees from this crisis?" He raised his trident and took a deep breath, knowing what to do next.

Shiva's Consumption of Poison

With a heart full of compassion, Lord Shiva decided to drink the poison. He gathered the poison with his Yogamaya and held it in his cupped hands. All the gods and demons watched in astonishment, no one could believe that anyone could dare to drink this poison. Lord Shiva chanted "Om Namah Shivaya" and drank the poison. As the poison reached his throat, there was intense burning, but he kept his mind steady and did not let the poison go down.

As soon as Lord Shiva drank the poison, an invisible force, by the grace of Vishnu, began to reduce the effect of the poison. It was Vishnu's grace that Shiva's body was not completely destroyed by the poison. A deep blue mark appeared on his throat due to the poison, due to which he became known as Neelkanth.

Parvati's Prayer

When Mother Parvati came to know that Lord Shiva had consumed the Halahal poison, she became distraught. She immediately reached Lord Shiva and held his throat with her hands, so that the poison would not go further down into his body. Parvati prayed to Lord Shiva to protect his life. Shiva, overwhelmed by the love and prayer of his wife, stopped the poison in his throat with his Yogic power, due to which his throat turned blue and he became known as Neelkanth. This sacrifice, this renunciation, will be remembered for ages. Now the gods and demons will get nectar, and many gems will appear from this churning of the ocean, which will be described in the next chapter.
