Balakanda: The Divine Beginning

Ayodhya, the capital of the Suryavansha, nestled on the banks of the Saryu River, was ruled by Maharaj Dasharatha. Prosperity and peace prevailed all around, yet Maharaj Dasharatha harbored a great sorrow – childlessness. His queens, Kausalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra, were filled with anguish, and the subjects of Ayodhya worried about the lack of an heir. This story begins with that very concern and the blessings of the gods, the tale of the birth of that divine child who liberated the earth from the tyranny of the demon king Ravana.

The Auspicious Hour of Rama's Birth

The ninth day of the bright half of the month of Chaitra arrived in the city of Ayodhya. The stars in the sky were fixed in their places, and the constellations were in an auspicious alignment. A gentle, fragrant breeze was blowing, rivers flowed with pure water, and the forests were lush with trees. It seemed as if nature itself was preparing for the arrival of the Lord. A divine radiance filled the chamber of Mother Kausalya, as if the brilliance of the sun had descended.

Mother Kausalya experienced a wondrous joy in her heart. She felt as if the entire universe had encompassed her womb. Just then, she saw a divine light and spontaneously uttered, "Jai Shri Ram." "O Lord! You have heard me," she pleaded with tear-filled eyes.

The Arrival of Vishwamitra

A few years later, while Rama and Lakshmana were engrossed in childhood play, a radiant sage arrived in Ayodhya one day. He was Maharshi Vishwamitra, whose penance made the three worlds tremble. Maharaj Dasharatha honored him appropriately and asked the reason for his visit. Vishwamitra said, "King, I have come here for an important task. Demons named Maricha and Subahu disrupt my sacrifices. I wish for you to send your son Rama with me, who can slay those demons."

Dasharatha became distressed. "Sage! Rama is still a child, how will he fight demons? I can send my army, but not Rama." Vishwamitra became angry, "Dasharatha, you are backing out of your promise! Do you not know that Rama is no ordinary child? He is an avatar of Vishnu himself! If you go back on your word, you will face the consequences."

The Slaying of Tadaka

Rama and Lakshmana set off towards the forest with their guru Vishwamitra. On the way, they entered the Tadaka forest, where the demoness Tadaka reigned with terror. Tadaka was extremely cruel and powerful; sages and ascetics feared entering that forest due to her. Vishwamitra told Rama about Tadaka and ordered him to kill her.

Rama obeyed his guru's command, strung his bow, and shot a divine arrow. The arrow struck Tadaka directly in the heart, and she fell to the ground with a scream. As soon as Tadaka was slain, the fear of the forest vanished, and the sages chanted victory for Rama. By Rama's grace, the forest became peaceful and safe again. This was the first display of Rama's power, which he exhibited in his childhood.

Conclusion

Thus, in Balakanda, the events of Rama's birth, the arrival of Vishwamitra, and the slaying of Tadaka marked the beginning of a divine and thrilling journey. Rama's departure from Ayodhya and his encounter with demons foreshadow the challenges ahead. Now, Rama and Lakshmana will proceed with Vishwamitra towards Mithila, where the Swayamvara of Sita is to be held.
