Chapter 2 of the Ramayana — Breaking of Shiva's Bow. Ram breaks the Shiva's bow at Sita's Swayamvar, and Ram and Sita get married.

The Breaking of Shiva's Bow

In the previous chapter, we heard the description of Lord Rama's birth and the divine plays of his childhood. There was an atmosphere of joy and peace in Ayodhya. Now, we turn our attention to Mithila, where preparations are underway for Princess Sita's Swayamvara, and where destiny has decreed the union of Rama and Sita.

The Arrangement of Sita's Swayamvara

The city of Mithila was adorned like a bride. King Janak had organized a Swayamvara for the marriage of his daughter Sita. Princes and kings from all directions had come to try their fortune. A grand pavilion was erected in the courtyard of the royal palace, where garlands of fragrant flowers swayed and golden pillars studded with jewels were resplendent. King Janak was worried, for the condition for his daughter's marriage was unique – the groom had to lift the divine bow of Lord Shiva, which had been given to him by Parashurama. The bow was so heavy that an ordinary person could not even move it.

King Janak announced in the assembly, "O kings and princes! Whoever among you, brave warrior, lifts this Shiva's bow and strings it, will be the husband of my daughter Sita." A deep despair was hidden in his voice, as he saw no warrior capable of this task. In his heart, he wondered, "Will my Sita remain unmarried? Is there no one who can lift this bow?"

Rama's Breaking of Shiva's Bow

Rama and Lakshmana, along with Muni Vishwamitra, were also present at the Swayamvara. When King Janak described the glory of Shiva's bow, Rama sought permission from Guru Vishwamitra. Upon receiving his guru's command, Rama slowly rose and walked towards the bow. All the princes and kings present in the assembly watched Rama with astonishment. Rama's humble and calm demeanor captivated everyone's hearts.

Reaching the bow, Rama bowed to it. Then, with effortless ease, he lifted the bow. Silence fell upon the assembly. Rama drew the bow to string it, and at that moment, a tremendous roar echoed. Shiva's bow broke into two pieces! The sound of the bow breaking was so loud that the entire city of Mithila trembled. Sita's face bloomed like a lotus.

This was not the strength of an ordinary Rama, but the divine radiance of Lord Vishnu manifesting in the form of Rama. The breaking of Shiva's bow was a sign that the union of Rama and Sita was divinely ordained. This event was a display of cosmic powers, necessary for the establishment of righteousness and the destruction of unrighteousness. By Rama's grace, Sita found her worthy groom, and a wave of joy spread through Mithila.

The Marriage of Rama and Sita

After the breaking of Shiva's bow, King Janak sent a message to Dasharatha, the king of Ayodhya. Dasharatha arrived in Mithila with his army. The marriage of Rama and Sita was solemnized according to Vedic rites. Along with Sita, her three sisters – Urmila, Mandavi, and Shrutakirti – were married to Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna, respectively. The four brothers returned to Ayodhya with their wives, and the entire city celebrated with festivities.

The marriage of Rama and Sita was not just the union of two individuals, but the union of two lineages, two kingdoms, and ultimately, two worlds. This marriage paved the way for the establishment of Dharma and the slaying of Ravana in the times to come. Now, in the next narrative, we will learn about Rama's exile and his life in the forest, where a new chapter of his life will begin.

Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, we heard the story of Sita's Swayamvara and Rama's breaking of Shiva's bow. This event led to the marriage of Rama and Sita and demonstrates that destiny had decreed their union. From this chapter, we learn that God always helps his devotees and provides the right opportunities for the establishment of righteousness.
