Chapter 15 : Purushottama Yoga – अध्याय १५: पुरुषोत्तमयोग

śrībhagavānuvāca ūrdhvamuulamadhaḥ śākhamāśvatthaṁ prāhuravyayam . chandāṁsi yasya parṇāni yastaṁ veda sa vedavit ॥
The Supreme Lord said: They speak of the immutable banyan tree as having its root above and branches below, whose leaves are the Vedas; he who knows it is the knower of the Vedas. ॥ 1 ॥
adhaścordhvaṁ prasṛtāstasya śākhā guṇapravṛddhā viṣayapravālāḥ . adhaśca muulānyanusantatāni karmānubandhiini manuṣyaloke ॥
The branches of that tree spread downwards and upwards, nourished by the qualities of nature; the objects of the senses are its buds; and its roots, which bind to action, extend downwards into the world of men. ॥ 2 ॥
na ruupamasyeha tathopalabhyate naanto na caadirna ca sampratiṣṭhā . aśvatthamenaṁ suviruuḍhamuula- masaṅgaśastreṇa dṛḍhena chittvā ॥
The real form of this tree is not comprehended here, nor its end, nor its beginning, nor its foundation. Having cut asunder this firmly rooted tree with the strong sword of detachment, ॥ 3 ॥
tataḥ padaṁ tatparimārgitavyaṁ yasmingatā na nivartanti bhuuyaḥ . tameva caadyaṁ puruṣaṁ prapadye yataḥ pravṛttiḥ prasṛtā purāṇii ॥
Then one should seek that abode, going whither they do not return again. I seek refuge in that Primeval Person from whom streamed forth the ancient activity (of the world). ॥ 4 ॥
nirmānamohā jitasaṅgadoṣā- adhyātmanityā vinivṛttakāmāḥ . dvandvairvimuktāḥ sukhaduḥkhasaṁjñai- rgacchantyamuuḍhāḥ padamavyayaṁ tat ॥
Free from pride and delusion, victorious over the evils of attachment, dwelling constantly in the Self, with desires completely stilled, liberated from the pairs of opposites known as pleasure and pain, the undeluded reach that immutable state. ॥ 5 ॥
na tadbhāsayate suuryo na śaśaṅko na pāvakaḥ . yadgatvā na nivartante taddhāma paramaṁ mama ॥
Neither the sun nor the moon nor fire illumines that, going whither they return not; that is My supreme abode. ॥ 6 ॥
mamaivaaṁśo jiivaloke jiivabhuutaḥ sanaatanaḥ . manaḥṣaṣṭhaaniindriyaaṇi prakṛtisthaani karṣati ।।
An eternal portion of Myself, having become a living soul in the world of life, draws (to itself) the five senses with the mind for the sixth, abiding in nature. ॥ 7 ॥
śariiraṁ yadavaapnoti yaccaapyutkraamatiishvaraḥ . gṛhiitvaitaani saṁyaati vaayurgandhaanivaaśayaat ।।
The sovereign, when he obtains a body, and when he leaves it, takes these and goes, as the wind carries scents from their places. ॥ 8 ॥
śrotraṁ cakṣuḥ sparśanaṁ ca rasanaṁ ghrāṇameva ca. adhiṣṭhaaya manaścāyaṁ viṣayānupasevate ॥
Presiding over the ear, the eye, the touch, the taste, the smell, and the mind, he enjoys the objects of the senses. ॥ 9 ॥
utkraamantaṁ sthitaṁ vaapi bhuñjaanaṁ vaa guṇaanvitam. vimuuḍhaa naanupaśyanti paśyanti jñānacakṣuṣaḥ ॥
The deluded do not perceive Him when He departs or stays or enjoys, united with the qualities; but they who have the eye of wisdom perceive Him. ॥ 10 ॥
yatanto yoginaśhcainaṁ paśhyantyaatmanyavasthitam . yatanto'pyakṛitaatmaano nainaṁ paśhyantyachetasaḥ ।।
The striving yogis behold Him dwelling in the Self; but the undisciplined and unintelligent, though striving, do not behold Him. ॥ 11 ॥
yadaadityagataṁ tejo jagadbhaasayate'khilam . yacchandramasi yachchaagnau tattejo viddhi maamakam ।।
That splendor of the sun which illumines this whole world, that which is in the moon, and that which is in the fire, know that splendor to be Mine. ॥ 12 ॥
gaamaaviśya ca bhuutaani dhaarayaamyahamojasaa . puṣhṇaami chauṣadhiiḥ sarvaaḥ somo bhuutvaa rasaatmakaḥ ॥
Permeating the earth, I support all beings by My energy; and, becoming the sapid moon, I nourish all herbs. ॥ 13 ॥
ahaṁ vaiśvaanaro bhuutvaa praaṇinaaṁ dehamaaśritaḥ . praaṇaapaanasamaayuktaḥ pachaamyannaṁ chaturvidham ।।
I, becoming the fire of life, abiding in the body of living beings, and united with the Prana and Apana, digest the four kinds of food. ॥ 14 ॥
sarvasya chaahaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo- mattaḥ smṛtirjñaanamapohanaṁ cha. vedaiśhcha sarvairahameva vedyo- vedaantakṛdvedavideva chaaham ।।
I am seated in the hearts of all; from Me are memory, knowledge, as well as their absence. I am verily the one to be known by all the Vedas; I am indeed the author of the Vedanta, and the knower of the Vedas. ॥ 15 ॥
dvaavimau puruṣhau loke kṣaraśhchaakṣhara eva cha. kṣharaḥ sarvaaṇi bhuutaani kuuṭastho'kṣhara uchyate ।।
There are two beings in this world, the perishable and the imperishable; all beings are perishable, and the Kutastha is called the imperishable. ॥ 16 ॥
uttamaḥ puruṣhastvanyaḥ paramaatmetryudaahṛitaḥ . yo lokatrayamaaviśhya bibhartyavyaya iishvaraḥ ।।
But distinct from these is the Supreme Being called the Paramatma, the immutable Lord, who, pervading the three worlds, sustains them. ॥ 17 ॥
yasmaatkṣharatiito'hamakṣharaadapi chottamaḥ . ato'smi loke vede cha prathitaḥ puruṣhottamaḥ ।।
As I surpass the perishable, and am even higher than the imperishable, therefore am I known in the world and in the Vedas as the Supreme Person. ॥ 18 ॥
yo maamevamasammuuḍho jaanaati puruṣhottamam . sa sarvavidbhajati maaṁ sarvabhaavena bhaarata ।।
He who, undeluded, thus knows Me as the Supreme Person, he, knowing all, worships Me with his whole being, O Bharata! ॥ 19 ॥
iti guhyatamaṁ śhaastramidamuktaṁ mayaanagha . etadbuddhvaa buddhimaan syaatkṛitakṛityaśhcha bhaarata ।।
Thus, O sinless one, has this most secret science been taught by Me. Knowing this, a man becomes wise, and has done all that is to be done, O Bharata! ॥ 20 ॥
ॐ tatsaditi śrīmadbhagavadgiitaasuupaniṣhatsu brahmavidyaayaaṁ yogaśhaastre śhriikṛiṣhṇaarjunasamvaade puruṣhottamayogo naama pañchadaśho'dhyaayaḥ

Arjuna said: Those devotees who, ever steadfast, worship You as the manifest (with form), and those who worship the imperishable, the unmanifest – which of these are more accomplished in Yoga?
