Purushottam Mas Katha: Adhyaya 9 | पुरुषोत्तम मास कथा: अध्याय 9

The maiden was distressed by her sorrows, and Durvasa Muni consoled her. Then, the maiden prayed to Shankar to alleviate her suffering, which led the Muni to provide her with a solution.

Sootji said, 'Then, filled with wonder, Narada Muni asked about the wonderful story of the intelligent Rishi's daughter. Naradji said, 'O Muni! What did Medhavi's daughter do later in that hermitage? And which best of Munis married her?

Shri Narayan said, 'The maiden spent some time in that house, remembering her father and constantly grieving. Like a doe separated from its herd, frightened, living in an empty house, with eyes filled with tears flowing from the steam rising from the fire of sorrow, with a burning heart-lotus, taking hot breaths of sorrow every moment, very wretched, confined in her house like a surrounded serpent, thinking of her sorrow and not seeing a way to be freed from sorrow, to console that slender-waisted one inspired by her good future, the very angry, 'who Indra himself fears to see,' with matted hair, like the direct incarnation of Shankar, Lord Durvasa Rishi came of his own accord into that forest.

O Narada! Lord Krishna said to King Yudhishthira, 'O Rajendra! That Durvasa came whom your mother Kunti had pleased in her childhood. Then that well-worshipped Maharishi gave her the knowledge to attract the gods, and O Bhupal! He made me, who is saluted by all the gods, yoke myself in place of oxen in the chariot with Rukmini.

While we both were pulling the chariot with Durvasa seated, as we were walking along the road, Rukmini, whose palate and lips had dried up from extreme thirst, informed me that she wanted water, then, with the yoke of the chariot on my shoulder, while walking, I pressed the earth with the tip of my foot, and, being under the control of Rukmini's love, I created the river named Bhogavati. Then that Bhogavati began to flow from above. Thereafter, O Maharaj! I quenched Rukmini's thirst with that water. Seeing Rukmini's thirst quenched in this way, Durvasa instantly burned with anger like fire and, rising up like the fire of destruction, Durvasa cursed. He said, 'It is very surprising, O Shri Krishna! Rukmini is always extremely dear to you, therefore, being attached to the love of a woman, you have disregarded me and showed your importance by giving her water in this way. Therefore, you both will be separated,' in this way he cursed.

O Yudhishthira! This is that Durvasa Muni. Born from the direct part of Rudra, like another Kalarudra, the divine fruit of the wish-fulfilling tree of Maharishi Atri's fierce penance. Born from the womb of Anasuya Bhagwati, the jewel of the heads of virtuous women, the extremely intelligent Rishi named Durvasa.

Seeing Durvasa Rishi, whose head was adorned with matted hair soaked with the water of many pilgrimages, the direct embodiment of penance, the maiden, emerging from the ocean of sorrow, prayed to the Muni's feet with patience. After praying, just as Janaki brought Valmiki Rishi to her hermitage, so too, she brought Durvasa to her house and, after taking permission for worship with Arghya, Padyam, and various kinds of wild fruits and flowers, respectfully worshipped him, and then, O Rajan! This maiden spoke.

The maiden said, 'O Mahabhag! O Sun of the Atri clan! I bow to you. O Sadhu! How has your auspicious arrival occurred in the house of this unfortunate one today? O Muni! With your arrival, my fortune has risen today, or have you, the best of Munis, come inspired by the flow of my father's merit to console me? The dust of the feet of great souls like you is a place of pilgrimage, and I have made my birth successful today by touching that dust, my vow is also successful today. I have had the sight of a virtuous soul like you today. Therefore, my birth and my merit are successful today.'

Saying this, the maiden stood silently before Durvasa. Then Durvasa Muni, born from the part of Lord Shankar, spoke with a gentle smile.

Durvasa said, 'O daughter of the twice-born! You are very good, you have redeemed your father's lineage. This is the fruit of the penance of the Rishi Medhavi. Because he had such a daughter as you. Knowing your devotion to Dharma, I came here from Kailash and my worship was done by you after coming to your house.

O Vararohe! I will soon go to Badrikashram to see the eternal, Sanatan, Narayan, Dev, the Lord of Munis, who is performing extremely fierce penance for the welfare of beings.'

The maiden said, 'O Rishi! With your sight alone, my ocean of sorrow has dried up. Now my future is bright; because you have consoled me, O Muni! Do you not know that great, blazing fire of sorrow that has arisen in me? O ocean of mercy! O Shankar! Quench that fire of sorrow. In my opinion, I see no cause for joy. I have neither mother, nor father, nor brother, who can give me courage, so how can I live, afflicted by the ocean of sorrow?

Whichever direction I look, that direction appears empty to me, therefore, O treasure of penance! Quickly relieve my sorrow. No one is willing to marry me. If I am not married at this time, then I will become a Vrishali Shudra, I have a great fear of this. Because of this fear, I neither get sleep nor do I have any interest in food, O Brahman! Now I am going to die soon, this is my certainty at this time.

Saying this, the maiden, shedding tears, became silent before Durvasa. Then Durvasa began to think of a way to remove the maiden's sorrow.
Shri Narayan said, 'In this way, hearing the words of the maiden and understanding her intention, the very angry sage Durvasa, with great compassion, thoughtfully considered her welfare and told her the essential solution.

Thus ends the ninth chapter of Shri Brihannaradiya Purushottam Maas Mahatmya ॥9॥
