Purushottam Maas Mahatmya (Significance)?

There is a very interesting story in the Puranas about Adhik Maas, meaning Malmaas, becoming Purushottam Maas. According to that story, the twelve months have different lords, but because Adhik Maas had no lord, it was greatly condemned for being called Malmaas. Distressed by this, Malmaas went to Shri Hari Vishnu and wept about his sorrow.

The devotee-loving Shri Hari took him to Goloka. There, Shri Krishna was seated. The compassionate Lord Shri Krishna, knowing the plight of Malmaas, gave him a boon: "From now on, I am your lord. All my divine qualities will be incorporated into you. I am known by the name Purushottam, and I am giving you this same name. From today, you will be known as Purushottam Maas instead of Malmaas."

According to the scriptures, the best, that is, Purushottam Maas, originates every three years. During this month, infinite merits are attained through chanting, penance, and charity. In this month, Shri Krishna, Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Shri Ram Katha recitation, and worship of Lord Vishnu are performed. Worshipping in this month has its own special significance. Special importance has been given to worshipping Tulsi in this month.

Great benefits are also obtained by reading and listening to stories in Purushottam Maas. Sleeping on the ground and eating only once a day during this month yields infinite rewards. The 12 months in a year are based on the twelve transits of the sun. Purushottam Maas comes after every three years.

According to the Panchang, besides all the dates, days, yogas, karanas, and constellations, every month has some deity as its lord, but since Purushottam Maas has no lord, all auspicious, good, and ancestral works are considered forbidden.

The importance of charity, religion, and worship is stated in the scriptures that by fasting, donating, worshipping, performing yagnas, havans, and meditating during this month, all the sins of a person are destroyed and they receive many times more merit. Even one rupee donated by you in this month gives you a hundredfold reward.

Therefore, keeping in mind the importance of Adhik Maas, it is very important to give charity and do good deeds in this month. Special attention is given to listening to Bhagavat Katha and Shri Ram Katha in this month. Bathing at religious pilgrimage sites gives you salvation and infinite merits.

The meaning of Purushottam Maas is that the month in which there is no solar transit is called Adhik Maas. In these, all auspicious works are especially considered forbidden, but this month is very fruitful for performing religious deeds. Religious events performed in this month are meritorious and are considered to give you a crore times more reward than other months.
