Parvati's Penance Story – Chapter 5: Shiva's Test of Parvati

Shiva's Test of Parvati
In the previous chapter, Parvati faced the severe hardships of nature and her physical limitations. Her penance and strong resolve helped her overcome every challenge. Now, the God of Gods, Shiva, himself was coming to test the depth of her devotion and the truth of her heart. His divine play was about to begin, which would further ignite the fire of Parvati's love and faith.
Shiva in the Form of a Brahmin
On the peak of Mount Kailash, a strong wind was blowing. A sheet of snow spread all around, on which the sun's rays were shining. Parvati was engrossed in her penance, her eyes closed and her mind immersed in the meditation of Shiva. There was a divine peace and radiance on her face, which made the atmosphere even more sacred. She sat in a state of detachment, as if she had no connection with the external world. Even the gods and goddesses were astonished to see this wondrous sight.
Just then, a radiant Brahmin appeared at that place. He had matted hair, ashes smeared on his body, and a water pot in his hand. The light of knowledge shone in his eyes, and a calm smile graced his face. "Narayana Narayana," the Brahmin said softly. "May I rest here for a while, O Goddess?"
Dialogue Between Parvati and the Brahmin
Parvati opened her eyes and looked at the Brahmin. There was no doubt in her mind, only a feeling of respect. She humbly welcomed the Brahmin and asked him to sit. The Brahmin took his seat and began conversing with Parvati. "O Goddess," the Brahmin said, "I have heard that you are performing severe penance to have Lord Shiva as your husband. Is this true?"
"Yes, it is true," Parvati replied. "I desire Lord Shiva with all my heart, and I am ready to face any difficulty to attain him." The Brahmin smiled and said, "But do you know what Shiva is like? He resides in cremation grounds, wears animal skins, lives with ghosts and spirits, and smears himself with ashes. Do you truly wish to marry such a person?"
Lines of anger appeared on Parvati's face, but she maintained her composure. "What are you saying about Lord Shiva?" she said. "He is the Lord of the universe, and his glory is immeasurable. You cannot understand him. His inner truth cannot be known by looking at his external form. I am his devotee, and I have unwavering faith that he is the truth of my life." Parvati added, "Your words have saddened me. Please leave this place."
Proof of Unwavering Faith
The Brahmin listened carefully to Parvati's words. There was no longer a smile on his face, but a serious expression. He looked into Parvati's eyes and saw there unwavering faith, deep devotion, and the flame of love for Shiva. He realized that Parvati's test was complete. There was no deficiency in her devotion, and her love was true.
Seeing this unwavering devotion and love of Parvati, Shiva in the form of the Brahmin was extremely pleased. His penance had been successful, and Shiva himself had come to give her this proof. Now, in the next chapter, Shiva was to appear in his true form, and a new chapter of Parvati's life was about to begin.
