Parashurama Avatar Katha – Chapter 5: Confrontation with Rama
Clash with Rama
The previous chapter was the story of twenty-one Kshatriya cycles, describing the anger of Parashurama and his fierce resolve to rid the Earth of Kshatriyas. Now, the event of Sita's Swayamvara had taken place in Janakpuri, and the news of the breaking of Shiva's bow was spreading in all directions with the speed of wind. This news also reached the ears of Maharishi Parashurama, in whose heart there was unwavering devotion towards Lord Shiva's bow.
Angry Arrival
As soon as Parashurama heard about the breaking of Shiva's bow, his anger flared up like fire. His eyes turned red, and his body trembled with rage. A terrible roar erupted from his mouth, which shook even the directions. It seemed as if Rudra himself had become enraged. His beloved axe (Parashu) was tightly held in his hand, and he set off towards Janakpuri, as if a storm of destruction was approaching.
"Who dared to do this? Who broke the bow of my revered deity, Lord Shiva? I will cut him down with my axe!" Parashurama roared in anger. His disciples and the Brahmins accompanying him tried to calm him down, but his anger showed no signs of subsiding. His mind was filled with only one thought – to punish the culprit who had broken Shiva's bow.
Encounter of Rama and the Sage
In Janakpuri, at the Swayamvara assembly, Parashurama arrived with tremendous force. His eyebrows were furrowed, and anger was clearly visible on his face. He struck fear into everyone present in the assembly. Guru Vishwamitra understood the situation and signaled Rama to come forward. Rama, with a calm and humble demeanor, came before Parashurama. Rama joined his hands and said, "O Maharishi, be kind to this servant and tell me how I can serve you?"
Parashurama, slightly disturbed by Rama's radiance and humility, but his anger had not yet subsided. He roared, "Who are you, boy? Who dared to do this? In your greed to marry Janaki, you broke the bow of my revered deity? Do you not know how much power this bow possessed?" Just then, the radiance of Vishnu entered Rama. Rama's aura increased, and Parashurama was astonished for a moment. He realized that no ordinary human was standing before him.
Seizure of Power
Rama said in a very calm voice, "O Maharishi, I only lifted this bow so that Sita Ji's Swayamvara could be completed. My intention was not to insult anyone." Parashurama's anger did not subside; he challenged Rama, asking him to string his Vaishnava bow if he had the strength. Rama humbly asked Parashurama for that bow. As soon as Rama took the bow in his hand, he strung it and nocked an arrow.
Rama said to Parashurama, "O Maharishi, now tell me in which direction I should release this arrow? Either I should seize the powers earned by your penance, or I should obstruct your movement." Parashurama then realized his mistake. He understood that Rama himself was an incarnation of Vishnu. This was Vishnu's illusion. Parashurama said, "O Rama, I know who you are. Seize the powers earned by my penance." Rama immediately seized the power of Parashurama's penance.
Summary of Chapter 5: In this chapter, we saw that upon the breaking of Shiva's bow, Parashurama became angry and arrived in Janakpuri, where he encountered Rama. Rama, with his humility and being an incarnation of Vishnu, calmed Parashurama's anger and seized the power of his penance. This event shows that the destruction of ego is inevitable, and all powers bow down before God.
