Navdurga Katha – Chapter 2: Brahmacharini: Penance and Devotion

Brahmacharini: Austerity and Devotion
In the previous chapter, we saw how Shailputri was born in the house of King Himalaya and how her heart became engrossed in Lord Shiva. Now, as Brahmacharini, the Goddess chose the path of relentless penance to attain Shiva as her husband. This chapter narrates the story of her rigorous practice, the guidance of Narada Muni, and her unwavering resolve.
The Origin of Penance: Divine Resolve
On the snowy peaks of the Himalayas, in a small hut, Goddess Brahmacharini began her penance. Her body was covered in yellow garments, her face radiated a divine glow, and her eyes held an unshakeable love for Shiva. Peace prevailed all around, with only the rustling of the wind and the occasional chirping of a bird to be heard. The Goddess had renounced food, subsisting only on fruits and flowers as she immersed herself in her spiritual practice. Her mind had but one goal – to attain Lord Shiva. "O Shiva, O Mahadeva," she chanted, "I shall surely attain you through my penance."
"How difficult this penance is," the Goddess thought to herself. "But my resolve is even stronger. I am Parvati, I am Shailputri, and I will prove my love." A firm smile played on her lips. She knew the path was arduous, but her faith was unshaken.
Narada Muni's Guidance
One day, as the Goddess was engrossed in her penance, Narada Muni appeared. He blessed the Goddess and said, "O Goddess, your penance is wondrous. I am pleased to see your resolve. However, the path of penance is deep and complex. You will need proper guidance and restraint." Narada Muni explained in detail to the Goddess the various aspects of penance, the chanting of mantras, and methods of meditation. He also told the Goddess that many obstacles would arise during her penance, but she must not deviate from her goal.
"O revered sage," the Goddess said humbly, "I am grateful that you have guided me. I will try my best to follow the path you have shown. My sole aim is to attain Lord Shiva, and I am ready to face any difficulty for it." Narada Muni was greatly impressed by the Goddess's firm resolve and blessed her with success. "Goddess," he said, "your devotion will surely be successful. Jai Shiv Shambho!"
The Fire of Penance
Time passed, and the Goddess's penance became even more rigorous. She even gave up fruits and flowers, subsisting only on Bilva leaves. Gradually, she stopped eating Bilva leaves as well and began her penance without consuming any food. Her penance was so severe that even the gods became worried. Chaos ensued all around. The Goddess's body had become emaciated, yet the radiance on her face continued to grow. Her penance was infusing energy into all three worlds.
Nature too was affected by Brahmacharini's penance. Even ferocious animals would sit peacefully near her hermitage, as if they too were cooperating in her penance. A divine atmosphere formed around the Goddess, where only peace and devotion resided. Lord Shiva himself could not remain unaffected by her extraordinary penance. He knew that Parvati's love was true and that he would surely accept her.
Towards Chandraghanta
Pleased by the rigorous penance of Goddess Brahmacharini, Lord Shiva decided to appear before her. In the next chapter, we will see how the Goddess's penance bears fruit and how she incarnates as Chandraghanta. Her radiance and power will illuminate the entire universe.
Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, we saw how Goddess Brahmacharini performed severe penance to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. Narada Muni guided her, and the Goddess faced all difficulties with her unwavering resolve and devotion. From this chapter, we learn that with strong willpower and true devotion, we can achieve any goal.
