Narasimha Avatar Katha – Chapter 6: Narasimha's Incarnation

In the previous chapter, God resolved to protect devotees and establish righteousness. Prahlada's devotion and Hiranyakashipu's tyranny had reached their peak. A wonderful event was about to happen in creation, an avatar that had never happened before.

The Pillar's Shriek

Hiranyakashipu's anger was at its peak. All attempts to kill Prahlada had failed. His ministers were terrified, the soldiers were trembling, but the dam of Hiranyakashipu's ego was still not broken. He grabbed his son Prahlada and brought him to the court. His eyes had turned red, as if a volcano was about to erupt. Prahlada stood calmly before his father, with unwavering faith in Lord Vishnu in his heart.

“O foolish child! You keep saying that your God is everywhere. Is he in this pillar too?” Hiranyakashipu roared and struck the pillar with his mace. “Yes father, he is here too,” Prahlada replied without any fear. Hiranyakashipu angrily struck the pillar again.

The Appearance of Narasimha

At that moment, there was a tremendous roar. The earth shook, lightning flashed in the sky, and the pillar burst. From that pillar emerged a wonderful creature – half man and half lion. His body was human, but his face was that of a lion. His eyes were like burning fire, and fear spread throughout the three worlds upon hearing his roar. This was the Narasimha avatar of Lord Vishnu.

The appearance of Lord Narasimha was a ray of hope for the devotees. It was proof of God's promise that he can appear in any form to protect his devotees. This avatar was to thwart Hiranyakashipu's boon, as he was neither fully human nor animal. The illusion of Lord Vishnu is boundless; he can take wonderful forms to save his devotees.

Slaughter at Dusk

Lord Narasimha caught Hiranyakashipu and took him to the gate of the palace. It was neither day nor night – it was dusk. He placed Hiranyakashipu on his thighs, which was neither earth nor sky. Then he tore Hiranyakashipu's chest with his sharp nails and killed him. This happened neither inside the house nor outside. Hiranyakashipu's end was the result of his deeds.

The killing of Hiranyakashipu was a symbol of the victory of righteousness. Lord Narasimha's anger subsided, and he blessed Prahlada. Peace prevailed in the atmosphere, and the gods showered flowers. In the next chapter, we will see how Lord Narasimha's anger subsides and how Prahlada establishes righteousness in his kingdom.
