Holika's Failed Attempt

In the previous chapter, we saw a description of Prahlad's rigorous trials and Hiranyakashipu's atrocities. Prahlad's devotion to Vishnu was unwavering, and even after enduring all kinds of tortures, he did not deviate from his devotion. Now, Hiranyakashipu decided to take the help of his sister Holika, who had a boon of not being burned by fire.

Preparation for the Fire Test

A huge pyre was prepared in the courtyard of the palace. The pile of wood was touching the sky, and there was an atmosphere of fear and curiosity throughout the kingdom. Hiranyakashipu's anger was at its peak, his eyes were red, and he was ready to go to any extent to turn Prahlad away from Vishnu's devotion. There was whispering among the subjects, everyone was worried about Prahlad's safety. The smell of fear and uncertainty was prevalent in the air, indicating the impending crisis.

Hiranyakashipu said to Holika, "Sister, today you have to demonstrate your power. Burn this wicked Prahlad to ashes in the fire, so that he forgets to take the name of Vishnu! This kingdom is mine, and only my command will be followed here." Holika proudly replied, "Don't worry, brother. Fire cannot harm me. This Prahlad will be reduced to ashes today." Prahlad, calm and steady, was chanting the name of his Narayan.

Protection of Prahlad in Fire

Holika sat on the blazing pyre with Prahlad in her lap. The fire was burning fiercely, the flames were licking the sky. Holika was sure that the fire could not harm her, because she had received a boon of protection from fire. But, as the fire reached its peak, an amazing event happened. Holika's boon became ineffective, and she herself started burning in the fire, while Prahlad remained completely safe.

By the grace of Lord Vishnu, a cool breeze blew. The flames of the fire did not even touch Prahlad, but surrounded him from all sides and formed a protective shield. Holika's clothes were burnt, and she was burnt to ashes, screaming and shouting. Prahlad, chanting the name of his beloved Vishnu, kept smiling in the fire, as if he was sitting in a cool place. Seeing this scene, the subjects were astonished and started chanting 'Jai Jai' of Lord Vishnu.

Victory of Devotion

Holika's burning to ashes was a symbol of the victory of good over evil. This incident shows that those who have faith in God have no fear of any kind. Hiranyakashipu was filled with anger and despair, as all his plans had failed. Now he was not able to understand how to stop Prahlad's devotion. Next time, he decides to question Prahlad himself about Vishnu.
