The Rise of Hiranyakashipu

In the beginning of creation, the conflict between the demons and the gods continued. The demons, born from Rishi Kashyap and his wife Diti, tried to seize the authority of heaven from the gods. One of these demons was Hiranyaksha, who was killed by Lord Vishnu in his Varaha avatar. To avenge his brother's death, Hiranyakashipu decided to perform severe penance.

Severe Penance on Mount Mandarachala

On the inaccessible peaks of Mount Mandarachala, Hiranyakashipu began his penance. His body was covered in dust and dirt, as if he had not bathed for years. Ants crawled up and down his body, but his penance remained steadfast. He had subdued his senses, his mind focused on only one goal – to please Brahma and obtain the boon of immortality. The scorching heat of the sun and the fierce onslaught of rain could not break his penance.

He thought, "I need the power to avenge my brother's death. The gods have killed my brother, now I will defeat the gods and become the lord of the three worlds. I will become the most powerful, obtaining a boon that will make me immortal."

Brahma's Boon

Hiranyakashipu's penance shook the three worlds. Fear spread among the gods. Finally, Brahma was pleased with his penance and gave him darshan. The entire mountain was illuminated by Brahma's radiance. Brahma said, "O King of Demons, I am extremely pleased with your penance. You may ask for any boon you desire." Hiranyakashipu joined his hands and said, "O Father, grant me such a boon that I may not die during the day, nor at night; neither by man, nor by beast; neither inside the house, nor outside; neither on earth, nor in the sky; neither by any weapon, nor by any arms." Brahma said, "So be it," and disappeared.

Brahma's grace was wonderful, but the devotees of Vishnu knew that nothing is greater than the Lord's play. Hiranyakashipu became arrogant, believing that no one could kill him now. Vishnu's devotees became worried, as Hiranyakashipu's atrocities increased day by day.

Terror in the Three Worlds

Having received the boon from Brahma, Hiranyakashipu became arrogant. He attacked heaven, defeated Indra, and established his authority over the three worlds. He stopped the gods from performing yagnas and began to trouble the sages. He declared that from now on, people would only worship him. There was chaos in the three worlds. Dharma began to decline, and adharma prevailed. Earth, heaven, and the netherworld were all afflicted by his cruelty.

Hiranyakashipu's atrocities had reached their peak. Now the devotees awaited Vishnu. They believed that only God could save them from this crisis. Will Vishnu hear the prayers of his devotees? In the next chapter, we will see how Prahlad's devotion gives a new twist to this story.
