Chapter 6 of the Mahabharata — Exile and Preparations. It describes the exile of the Pandavas, their hardships, and the preparations for the Mahabharata war.

Exile and Preparations

After the terrible tragedy of the dice game, Yudhishthira, in fulfillment of his vow, sent the Pandavas into exile for twelve years and one year of incognito. The insult to Draupadi, the fall of Indraprastha, and the sorrow of separation from loved ones had left deep wounds in the hearts of the Pandavas. But they resolved to remain steadfast on the path of Dharma.

Twelve Years in the Forest

The lives of the Pandavas in the dense forests were filled with hardships. They walked barefoot on stony paths, sustained themselves by eating roots and fruits, and lived in constant fear of wild animals. Draupadi, who had been raised in royal palaces, was now facing the difficulties of the forest. Though her heart must have been troubled, she never complained, adhering to her husband's dharma. Bhima, with his mace, was always ready to protect his brothers and Draupadi. Arjuna continued to practice his archery, so that he could prepare himself to reclaim Hastinapur. Yudhishthira constantly contemplated Dharma and encouraged his brothers to be patient. Nakula and Sahadeva were devoted to serving their elder brothers.

"Brother Yudhishthira," Bhima said one day, "How long will we endure this injustice? How long will we wander in this forest? Will we not punish the sons of Dhritarashtra for their sins?" Yudhishthira replied in a calm voice, "Bhima, Dharma is supreme. We must fulfill our vow. A decision made in anger and haste is always destructive. When the time comes, Dharma itself will guide us."

Arjuna and Divine Weapons

During their exile, Arjuna decided to obtain divine weapons from Indra. He performed severe penance, controlled his senses, and pleased the gods. Indra himself appeared before Arjuna and bestowed upon him many divine weapons, including the Brahmastra, Vajra, and Agneyastra. Arjuna also gained knowledge of how to use these weapons. Lord Shiva was also pleased with Arjuna's penance and granted him the Pashupatastra, considered the most powerful weapon in all three worlds. Thus, Arjuna became even more powerful and capable for battle.

Lord Krishna was Arjuna's dearest friend and guide. He inspired Arjuna to uphold the Kshatriya dharma and fight against unrighteousness. Krishna also explained to Arjuna that victory in war is not achieved by might alone, but also by Dharma, policy, and justice. By Krishna's grace, Arjuna's mind was calm and steady, and he was focused on his goal.

Gathering of Armies at Kurukshetra and Declaration of War

The twelve years of exile and one year of incognito for the Pandavas were complete. Now they wished to return to Hastinapur and reclaim their kingdom. They sent Krishna as a peace envoy to the Kauravas, but Duryodhana refused to give the Pandavas even land as much as the tip of a needle. War was now inevitable. Armies from both sides began to gather on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Grandfather Bhishma became the commander of the Kaurava army, while Arjuna chose Krishna as his charioteer. The land of Kurukshetra echoed with the conch shells of warriors and the roar of chariots. The clouds of war began to gather, and the great war of Mahabharata was about to begin. Both armies stood facing each other, and war was declared.

Summary of Chapter 6: In this chapter, we have seen the hardships of the Pandavas' exile, Arjuna's acquisition of divine weapons, and the gathering of both armies at Kurukshetra. From this chapter, we learn that while there are difficulties in following the path of Dharma, ultimately truth triumphs. This chapter sets the stage for the next chapter, the Bhagavad Gita, where Arjuna will receive knowledge from Krishna.
