Lanka Victory Story – Chapter 1: The Prince of Ayodhya, Rama

Prince Rama of Ayodhya
For countless ages, gods and humans had been waiting for Lord Vishnu, who was to incarnate on Earth to restore Dharma. The three worlds were afflicted by the tyranny of the demon Ravana, and the gods prayed to Lord Vishnu to free them by killing Ravana. Hearing the pitiful cry of the gods, Lord Vishnu decided to be born as the son of King Dasharatha in Ayodhya.
Incarnation in the Raghu Clan
The city of Ayodhya, situated on the banks of the Sarayu River, was a symbol of prosperity and peace. King Dasharatha, the pride of the Raghu clan, loved his subjects like his own children. But there was a deep sorrow in his heart - he had no children. Queens Kaushalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra were all radiant and devout, but unable to give the kingdom an heir. One day, King Dasharatha expressed his pain to Rishi Vashishtha, his heart yearning for a son. Rishi Vashishtha advised him to perform the Putrakameshti Yagya, which would surely grant him a son. Preparations for the Yagya began with great fanfare, and the entire city of Ayodhya was immersed in celebration.
Queen Kaushalya prayed in her heart to God, "O Lord, if a son is born from my womb, may he be the protector of Dharma and the nurturer of the people." Queen Kaikeyi also wished in her heart, "May the lamp of my clan walk on the path of truth and justice." Queen Sumitra prayed for both the queens, "O God, may both the queens be blessed with excellent sons."
Arrival of Vishwamitra
After the Yagya was completed, four radiant sons were born from the essence of Lord Vishnu. Kaushalya gave birth to Rama, Kaikeyi to Bharata, and Sumitra to Lakshmana and Shatrughna. Rama, the eldest prince, was a treasure trove of beauty and virtues. His face was illuminated with radiance, and his voice was filled with nectar. Gradually the princes grew up. Rama was known for his calm nature and kindness towards all. Bharata was famous for his intelligence and sense of justice. Lakshmana had unwavering devotion to Rama and was always ready to protect him. Shatrughna was Bharata's follower and affectionate. One day, Rishi Vishwamitra arrived in Ayodhya. His radiance was as bright as the sun, and the aura of penance was reflected on his face. He requested King Dasharatha to take Rama and Lakshmana with him so that they could protect his Yagya from demons.
Vishwamitra said, "O King, I know that you do not want to part with your sons, but Rama and Lakshmana are needed to protect my Yagya. Only these two princes can face the demons." King Dasharatha's heart was filled with affection for his sons, but he could not disobey the sage's command.
Killing of Tadaka
Rama and Lakshmana set off towards the forest with Rishi Vishwamitra. On the way, they encountered a demoness named Tadaka, who was spreading terror in the forests with her atrocities. Rishi Vishwamitra told Rama about Tadaka and ordered him to kill her. Rama first warned Tadaka, but when she did not listen, he killed her with his arrow. After the killing of Tadaka, Rishi Vishwamitra gave Rama many divine weapons, so that he could face the demons in the future. Rama accepted all those weapons with reverence.
By killing Tadaka, Rama not only protected Rishi Vishwamitra's Yagya, but also freed the innocent forest dwellers from her terror. This incident introduced Rama's bravery and devotion to Dharma. It also indicated that Rama had incarnated on Earth only to establish Dharma.
Towards Sita Swayamvar
Rishi Vishwamitra took Rama and Lakshmana to Mithila, where King Janaka had organized the Swayamvar of his daughter Sita. Vishwamitra knew that this was an important turning point in Rama's life, because Sita herself was an incarnation of Lakshmi and her union with Rama was destined. Now the story ahead revolves around Sita Swayamvar and the meeting of Rama and Sita.
