Chapter 3 of Goddess Lakshmi's Story — Various Incarnations and Forms. This chapter describes the various incarnations of Goddess Lakshmi such as Sita, Radha, and Padmavati, and explains the purpose of each incarnation.

Various Incarnations and Forms

After understanding the importance of Lakshmi as the consort of Vishnu, it is essential to know why she took various incarnations on Earth from time to time. These incarnations were solely to establish Dharma and for the salvation of devotees, in conjunction with Lord Vishnu. Mother Lakshmi, in her various forms, has presented a unique example of love, sacrifice, and compassion. Come, let us hear the stories of some of her prominent incarnations among these forms.

Incarnation as Sita

In the Treta Yuga, when Lord Vishnu took birth as Rama in Ayodhya, Mother Lakshmi incarnated as Sita in Janakpur. A maiden born from the earth, Sita's beauty and purity were unparalleled. King Janak found a divine infant while plowing, who was none other than Lakshmi herself. Sita's love, sacrifice, and patience are a source of inspiration for every woman. Her beauty was such as if the moon god himself had descended on earth, and her voice had a sweetness like a veena being played.

"O Janak! Who is this wonderful maiden? Is she a goddess or merely my imagination?" King Janak exclaimed in wonder. Immense affection for Sita welled up in his heart. Sita smiled, and in that smile, the beauty of the entire universe was contained. "Father, I am your daughter, and your love is my existence," Sita said in her heart.

Incarnation as Radha

In the Dvapara Yuga, when Lord Vishnu took birth as Krishna in Vrindavan, Mother Lakshmi descended as Radha. The love between Radha and Krishna was not merely physical but a union of souls. Radha is a symbol of complete devotion and selfless love towards Krishna. The divine plays of Radha-Krishna in the lanes of Vrindavan still fill the hearts of devotees with joy. On the banks of the Yamuna, amidst the gentle breezes, the love song of Radha-Krishna continues to resonate.

Radha said to Krishna, "O Krishna, you are the basis of my life. Without you, I have no existence." Krishna replied with a smile, "Radhe, you are my strength. It is through your love that I sustain this world. Our love is eternal and will remain immortal for ages to come." This love of Radha-Krishna was indeed a divine form of the love between Lakshmi and Vishnu.

Incarnation as Padmavati

In the Kali Yuga, Mother Lakshmi took birth as Padmavati in the house of King Akashraj of Chandragiri. Her marriage to Lord Venkateswara (a form of Vishnu) was a significant event. Padmavati's beauty was unparalleled, and the tales of her virtues spread in all directions. Lord Venkateswara, falling in love with Padmavati, decided to marry her. The marriage of Padmavati and Venkateswara is still celebrated with immense reverence and devotion in Tirumala.

King Akashraj said to his ministers, "Padmavati is the very form of Lakshmi, who has come to bless our lineage. We must find a suitable groom for her." Akashraj organized a Swayamvara (a ceremony where a bride chooses her husband from a group of suitors), to which princes from far and wide came. Then, Lord Venkateswara arrived at the Swayamvara as a simple Brahmin, and Padmavati chose him as her groom. This was a symbol of the union of Lakshmi and Vishnu.

Conclusion of the Chapter

The stories of Mother Lakshmi's various incarnations teach us that love, sacrifice, and compassion are the true paths of life. In every era, she has protected devotees and bestowed upon them prosperity and happiness. In the next chapter, we will learn how Lakshmi is worshipped as the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, and what are the ways to receive her grace.
